Accepted into second choice major... How to switch?

So i got accepted OOS today, however the letter mentioned that i had been rejected from my preferred major, Computer Science and been admitted into my second choice, Economics. However I would like to know if it is possible to switch to Computer science before the year starts even though i was already rejected from it once. Also some other questions:

If it is possible how do i do it?

If it isn’t possible to switch before the year starts, when can i switch?

Is it true that the first year is just general studies?

How hard would it be to change from an Economics major to a Computer science major once the school year starts?

Thanks in advance!!!

You can’t switch before the school year starts because you have been rejected from CS. You will have to apply again the following semester.

At the accepted student day they specifically called out computer science, engineering and Isenberg as being the most competitive majors for on campus transfers. You will have to do well is several predictor classes such as the intro programming class and calculus and then apply. There is no guarantee they will take you. If you truly want to be a computer science major and have been accepted into that major at another school you may want to consider your options.

Here is the detailed info on how to transfer if you are on campus - good luck

I am in the same boat as you. I didn’t get into the CS program so they placed me in their new Undeclared major for Natural Sciences. I was also wondering whether i would be able to switch, as my parents won’t let me attend unless it’s for Comp Sci - they don’t really want me going in as undeclared. Does anyone know if i have some level of priority in grabbing a spot in their CS program? I just think it is really unfair the way they do it. To be honest, I have much higher credentials than a lot of my classmates who got in but they applied early. About 150 kids in my senior class applied to Umass and so many applied for CS, half of them aren’t even going there; it was a safety school for them. There just wasn’t enough room for me, so maybe there is a chance that i can get in?

@emmasawr - Perhaps the other kids didn’t apply to CS, most people with a 3.8+ WGPA and a 1850+ SAT will be able to get into UMass undecided. I understand your frustration but the good part is that as long as you maintain a solid GPA at UMass you should be able to switch into CS. (Give up on transferring into Isenberg though that’s very tough…)
