Accepted Student Visit - what to do?

My daughter has been accepted and we will be visiting in 2 weeks. She was waiting for other decisions so did not sign up for the accepted students weekend or the Cane for a Day (which is full). I signed her up for a tour (which we did when we visited last year). We live far away and she really wants to go back and have one more good look around to try to get a better feel for the school before she commits. I believe she will be attending Univ of Miami in the fall. I will be renting a car. What else do you recommend we do when we are down there. We will have 2 days to check things out. Is there anyone we should try to meet with at the school? Can she try to arrange to sit in on a class? I called admissions and was told - the tour, that's it. You guys have been very helpful so I thought you might have suggestions. I just want her to feel comfortable. It will be hard to drop my 17 year old off, far from home, if she is uncomfortable. I know she really liked the campus when we were there before, but we were touring multiple schools then in a short period of time. I hope for this to be a more complete visit.

THANKS.

I know the School of Communication offers their own separate tour of their buildings so I suggest calling whichever school your daughter plans to study in to see if that is a possibility. Be sure to eat in the food court or the Rat, or sit in the sun on the patio next to the pool and people watch for a while. See if any athletic home games or theater shows are scheduled which you might like to attend. Sunset Place is a mall that students walk to [The Shops at Sunset Place - South Miami, FL 33143 | Simon Malls](http://www.simon.com/mall/?id=143) where they like to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings. Coconut Grove has a restaurant/shops area that students shuttle to http://www.cocowalk.net/</a> . Crandon Park is a popular beach [Miami-Dade County - Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces - Crandon Park](http://www.miamidade.gov/parks/parks/crandon_beach.asp). If you have time to explore further I suggest South Beach to stroll Ocean Ave. and see the art deco buildings lit up with neon lights after dark, a sightseeing cruise from Bayside Marketplace, and a trip to the everglades for an airboat ride or tram tour. Good luck!

I would say take a cruise through South Beach and downtown Miami, and also go over to Key Biscayne because that’s usually where we go to the beach. Coconut Grove is also a major student hangout and Sunset Place is a regular visit for shopping/seeing a movie.

If I were you, I would go to Starbucks and hang there for a while( outside or in), then I would go to the book store, eat in the food court and then park yourselves in the lobby of one of the freshman dorms. You will see lots of students going about their day and it will give her a good feel for things.

Thanks for all of these ideas. We will try to do lots of these things. It sounds like a great area with so many things to do. I will love visiting her!! Hopefully, this trip will help her fall in love with the school and the area!!

What part of the country are you coming from Warmweather?

Pennsylvania

ClassOf15 really nailed it. Visiting these spots will really help your D get a feel for life at UM and will help orient you both to the area. You will feel much better leaving her far from home if the area seems familiar and you can picture her surroundings. Good luck and have a great visit.
