Accepted Students Day

Is anybody going to the accepted students day, this Saturday?

No, but would love to hear about it!

Am sure others would too, so please come back and share what you can about your experience.

I know there are students in the CC cyber world trying to make decisions now.

I certainly will.

i'm going tomorrow! thank you to those of you who answered my other post. those were great suggestions! we drove around town today, and i really like the campus and the surrounding area. downtown allentown seems a little rundown, and i'm not sure how safe it is. i talked to an admissions officer, and she was amazingly nice and helpful. i'll be sure to post my impressions after the grand tour.

i learned a lot at the program today! first of all, for people who don't live within driving distance, the allentown airport is really nice. before i was thinking that i would have to fly into philadelphia, but it's much easier to fly into allentown and take a cab to muhlenberg (about 8 miles). i took a connecting flight from greenville, sc to cleveland, but next time i'll take a direct flight from charlotte.

the first event after registration was a student life panel, and i thought it was interesting to hear the different student perspectives. it seems like it's really easy to get involved in extracurricular activities and that the professors are very accessible. one thing they really emphasized is that the college pays 200+ student tutors to help other students in difficult subjects.

then, there was a large session that included speeches from a student, one of the deans, and the president. the president has a great sense of humor and seems to be popular with the students.

after that, i went to a session on the sciences/pre-health. the pre-med program is pretty intense, but the professors really want to help students to succeed. last year 25 out of 30 students were accepted to medical school. i stayed after and asked the chemistry professor a few questions (Dr. Shive), and i was really impressed by the fact that he saw us during lunch and came to eat with us. i'm also glad to see that they encourage undergraduate research and majoring in humanities (instead of science) for premedical students.

during lunchtime, there were several dozen tables set up for different departments and extracurricular activities. i thought the students running the tables were really helpful about what to expect. after talking to a student in an a capella group, i ended up attending a concert in the student center. several student groups performed, including a clogging group, two a capella ensembles, and two bands. i was really impressed with their performances, especially The Dynamics, a coed a capella group that performed a wide variety of popular music.

i also went on a residence hall tour. all of the dorms are pretty nice, and i'm not sure which one i'll request. Walz is considered the nicest because it has air conditioning, but most of the students told me that it's pretty much impossible to get into unless you're early decision. i liked prosser, but the rooms are a little small. brown is definitely the prettiest dorm. the rooms i saw were very spacious and had 12 foot ceilings and fireplaces. it is an all-female dorm that houses both freshmen and upperclassmen. i'm a little hesitant to live in single-sex dorm (even if it is nicer), but the students i talked to really like it because it's quieter than the others.

the college definitely has the "community feel" that it advertises, and i was glad to see that the students are down-to-earth and aren't very "cliquey". i'm excited to be going there! if you have any more questions about the day, just let me know.

My D will be a freshman there next year too. Happy to hear your report. Thank you!

Great report- My D is a freshman! She lives in Brown and it is more subdued than the other co-ed dorms. I think a couple of rooms might have fireplaces, and that is not the norm FYI.

So glad you had such a nice experience. My D said the Pres of the college just sat down in the cafeteria with her small group one day, and just chatted with them about their experience at Muhlenberg so far.
Apparently, he is known for doing that.

At the June Advising day last year, the Dean Of Student Affairs sat with my D and H, because they were stuck in the overflow professor dining area. I guess he didn't want them to seem alone there. Nice touches.

Funny to hear you all talking about dorm ammenities such as air conditioning and fireplaces. As a Californian, I'd be most interested in the fireplaces!! Brrrr.

sorry to tell you this Elliottsmom, but they are not functioning fireplaces, as far as I know they are decorative, left there when the building was remodeled..................not the toasty, cozy things you were imagining :)

Hi all,
My D has decided to go to Muhlenberg. In fact, we left the deposit while at the accepted students day. The size, community feel, academics, leadership opportunities, and availability to be involved in many activites/clubs had put this school on the top of her list, and visiting again clinched it.
The two words that come to mind, that describle the feeling I got after listening to all of the speakers (Professors, President, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, and students) are integrity and passion.
It was fun to visit the dorms. It was not the typical tour of seeing a "model room". We were taken through the three freshman dorms and had plenty of time to look and speak to students who were living there. I saw rooms that were a mess...many had their doors open and were working at their desks, etc. and some were very neat/organized with students just waiting for us to come by and welcome us. The freshman dorms (except for Brown) were typical small, cinder block rooms, with beds raised and each having its own creative way of making the best possible use of the space. No matter though, what was important was how welcoming and happy the students seemed to be.
Sarah did a great job of describing the day's activities and interactions with the students and faculty.
Let me know if I can answer any other questions.
Good luck to all in your college search and making the "big" decision!

wow! Congrats Musicann and great to hear your visit went well.
And, great that you can help others with Muhlenberg, info :)
