Got the purple envelope. I feel really bad for my friend, though. His status changed to the same as ours, but his transcript didn't load. :/

It seems like the batch they did this time consisted mostly of priority applicants.

does it mean your friend get rejected? it's the first time i've seen this case. or maybe he'll just wait for a while for the transcript to be loaded? i mean why does uw make rejection decision this early while there are still lots of applicants not hearing back the good news?

rainmama, are you absolutely serious about the 3.45 unweighted student getting in?! Because that was my unweighted GPA after junior year... with SEVEN AP and three honors classes. And I'm still stressing out about not getting in. Does this mean I still may have a chance?

Magicalchris, I don't know for sure if this is indicative of rejection. But if that is the case, I don't think he will get the letter until late March. According to what I heard of admissions last year, rejected students get their letter at the end of March. But what we currently know is that if your transcript loads, then you're in. It's unfortunately most likely that no transcript = no admission. Also, usually accepted students' transcripts will load immediately after the status changes to: "We have reviewed your app..."

Kevin, after UW moved to a holistic process, they now heavily consider other factors like ECs, personality traits, essays, volunteer work, etc. (overcoming adversity seems to be a big one with them) So don't rely on your GPA alone. And it seems like your coursework was challenging; I wouldn't worry about it.

Kevin - I wouldn't give up yet, if you have good test scores and other qualities to bump you up. Actually, I think my son would have had an easier time of it under the old process. UW used to rank all WA high schools based on their comparison of high school GPA to college GPA. My S's school had the highest rating, so UW would add a pretty big chunk to the unweighted GPA. I don't think they still do that under the holistic process. Good luck!

Thanks; your responses are much appreciated!

I'm kind of curious though, what is mean by personality traits? How are they able to find out something like that through an online application, when they haven't even met you?

They will never be able to tell how you are on a personal level. What I meant by that was how they will be able to interpret your personality based primarily on your essays. Your essays will tell them a lot. If you are passionate about something, then it will show in the essay.

Yeah I was looking at the freshman admission handbook they gave out, and among the things that they're looking for is "demonstrating a positive grade trend." Well, my grade trend is absolutely TERRIBLE:

1st sem 9th: 3.883
2nd sem 9th: 3.833
1st sem 10th: 3.883
2nd sem 10th: 3.883
1st sem 11th: 2.783
2nd sem 11th: 2.483

1st sem 12th: 2.833
Cumulative after 11th grade: 3.458
Cumulative after 1st sem 12th: 3.369

Still think I've got a pretty good shot after seeing that? Those three AP classes in junior year really killed me, and I only got one A in all of that year. Under the old system, I would never get in, but would the new system really help me that much?

The new system uses more subjective factors and more personal judgment on the account of the admissions officers. It's very simply. If you look like a competent, noteworthy student, then you'll get in. Like I said, don't keep freaking out over your GPA, there's more to it than that.

Yeah I know, it's just that it feels weird to know that UW is now placing so much more emphasis on essays and extra-curriculars, when they can't even verify that what you say is true. Speaking of which, I've heard not to include an extra-curricular unless you are an officer of that club... I don't remember exactly how I filled in the spaces, but I did fill out all five of them, which I'm hearing is not such a good idea to do. I wasn't an important member of any of them either. To make matters worse, I don't think I wrote more than five sentences for each, even though I knew that they asked for a "substantial paragraph" for each.

Maybe I'm just stressing out too much; I've already gotten accepted to Western Washington University and Washington State University. Which one would be the better fallback if I don't get in?

I'm not sure, so get a second opinion on this, but it is my belief that Western is the better school.

I included three clubs on my app even though I wasn't an officer for any of them. I think I put my position as "Dutiful Member" lol. However, my five paragraphs were about other ECs since I was more active them (active as in I held leadership positions...).

kevinatrs--I'm a second-year student at UW now; but if I hadn't been accepted to UW and had to stay in-state for school, I'd be at Western. It's a really nice school in a nice cozy city that offers a very similar blend that UW has, just on a smaller scale. I might add that I graduated from high school in Eastern Washington, so I know first-hand what it's like to live on that side of the state. But in regards to Western, not only does it have a nicer campus, nicer location, and generally, more interesting activities to do than WSU, it's a stronger school academically. Here are some other things to think about: in terms of location, Bellingham is close in proximity to Seattle and Vancouver, BC, so it's easy to get away for the weekend. The Amtrak trains along the Cascade routes are very accessible, very affordable, and always very scenic. On the other hand, if you're at WSU, there really isn't much to do in Pullman, and Spokane doesn't offer much more. As you choose your college to attend, you should definitely keep in mind that you'll be there for four years and you'll want a place that you can comfortably call home. Good luck!

Kevin, Husky is right. Western is a much better school and offers considerably more geographically. However, if your liver can take the punishment-consider WSU.

I got my purple packet today :]

Yay, congrats serpentine! The purple packets make us all happy.
