Accepted Students Weekend

Hello,

Does anyone know the specific date(s) for the accepted students weekend at Carnegie Mellon this year? I searched all over the CMU website and could not find any info about it. A friend of mine attended it last year so I know CMU has one. I want to know the exact date this year so I can start making plans.

Thanks!

I know it is NOT the weekend of Spring Carnival which is April 15-17.

That would leave one of the first two weekends of April. End of April too late to wait to visit.

Tip to accepted students: Housing dorm preferences are filled in the order you place your deposit-- this is VERY important to keep in mind. It’s not a lottery, it’s not who screams the loudest…it’s not even if you have the highest GPA…it’s all about when you pay your deposit.

Go to the housing webpage…there are specific dorms set for freshman on campus (Mudge, Donner, Morewood, Stever) and then some of the off-campus (15 minute walk or 5 minute shuttle) apartments. Reality-- there are 1400+ freshman - but they don’t all end up in the campus dorms-- space is limited (they do guarantee housing- but don’t be fooled- they do NOT guarantee freshman will be placed in an on-campus dorm).
If you wait until the last few days leading up to May 1 to make your decision- you WILL most certainly end up in the off-campus CMU housing…these are very nice apartments-- but 1) they cost much more than a dorm room (you’re stuck with a mandatory freshman meal plan - so the kitchen is worthless) and 2) they are off campus. You’re with freshman-- but it’s a different experience- and not for everyone.

So if you think CMU is your first choice-- don’t delay waiting for accepted students weekend - send in your deposit as soon as you hear you’re accepted-- charge cards accepted and it’s $800 this year! (credited to your fall invoice).

Sometime in mid-late May you then fill out an online form with your dorm, room-type and other questions…there’s no rush to fill that in as the date of your deposit is the factor determining if you get your first choice.
Don’t worry- there truly is nothing wrong with any of the dorms…they all have their “flavor”, they are various proximities to campus, sizes, ages and some even have A/C (which you only need the first week or so of fall)…it will be home way from home regardless of where you end up…there really is no disappointment to anticipate…only great times ahead!

Thank you for the reply!

Just a few comments to add to what mom2012and14 had to say:

1) I agree, do try to send in your deposit as soon as you are sure CMU is where you will end up.

2) That said, if you do not send in your deposit right away, not all hope is lost. There is a good chance you’ll be looking for roommates in the Facebook group anyways, so while you’re asking them what they like to do for fun, work patterns, etc. go ahead and message them to find out when they submitted their deposit. Best case: they’re ED accept or submitted deposit early. So even though you may not have the highest priority in the room draw, they will, and by them requesting you as their roommate you can still end up in one of the more popular buildings.

3) I’m pretty sure freshmen who end up in off-campus housing can enroll on the (yellow) commuter meal plan, which amounts to 1 meal block per day (14 per 2 weeks) on campus. That gives you 2 meals per day to put your kitchen to use if you so choose.

4) Biggest downside to living in the oakland apartments? During orientation your color will be pink. Sucks, yeah, but as an oakland RA i’ll share in your misery come House Wars.

There seems to be some misunderstanding. My original question has nothing to do with dorms and housing deposits. Although, thank you guys for that reminder about the order in which dorm preferences are filled. I am sure there are other readers who found that information helpful.

By plans, I meant booking hotel rooms (I plan to explore the local area), buying flight tickets, etc… Prices go up and choices go down if everything is done in a rush, so I wish to buy everything early.

:) Is there anyone who already contacted CMU about this year’s accepted students weekend and is willing to share what the CMU staff replied?

I understood your questions perfectly…and meant to imply it must be the first two weekends in April.
As I recall last year there were huge banners on the parking lot “Welcome Class of 2013” when we attended Spring Carnival…which means it has to have happened prior to that weekend.
It cannot possibly be the first weekend-- not too many people can scramble and buy plane tickets without advance purchase pricing discounts.

Reality- you can visit anytime - there are tours every day - accepted students weekends IMHO are a bit too contrived…visit on a “normal” day to get a true feeling of a campus.

Just call and ask Admissions for the date…

Last year it was on the first weekend, April 5 - 6, Sunday and Monday.

Just wondering…is it okay to still enroll on 4/1 and still get a dorm of your own choice?
I want to try going for dorms such as Mudge or Morewood, but I’m afraid I might end up somewhere else that I didn’t really want to be in.

Thanks!

Nobody is guaranteed your first choice of housing. None of them are really that terrible. Even if you get stuck in Schlag or Scobel you’ll find the “less desirable” dorms tend to have a good community feel since you’re all crammed in such a small space.

You will absolutely be set if you reply April 1…

There are 1500 freshman-- more or less…and at best 200 EA/ED…with a few hundred spaces on campus.

Freshman dorms: Mudge, Moorewood Tower, Stever, Donner

?? What’s wrong with the two all -male dorms???

Do you think it would be fair to say that if you were accepted ED (Deposit received Jan 21) you can basically get into any dorm you want? haha

Yeah. ED gets awesome priority. I applied ED2 and my roommates were all ED, and we live in one of the sweetest rooms on campus.

Beckerboy

You’ll get into any FRESHMAN designated dorm you want…you will not get a spot in Resnick if that is what you were thinking – sophomores have a hard enough time getting a room (they seem to get screwed every year).

In May/June you fill out a housing request form, it asks for Dorm preference (specify three I believe), room type preference (single, double, triple, quad and prime vs. standard (that’s bathroom down the hall vs. in the room)), and co-ed or non-co-ed floors etc. and then three questions: smoking/non smoking, night/day person and neat/dirty person … or if you find a roommate before you can also both mutually include the others’ name on the form as well.
In the 2012 class, if there was a HUGE difference in date of deposit…some requested pairs did not get placed together. THat year had an overflow of acceptances and some students were tripled up and some even placed in temporary off campus housing…that is also the year that CatMan and London Terrace grabbed up several freshman spaces (leading to screwed sophomores).

? kate …can you tell why Henderson and Welch are not listed this year as freshman options this year-- they used to have a floor reserved for freshmen in these two?

I’m not sure, to be honest. I know Henderson House is technically considered Special Interest Housing, which means there’s a student committee that takes care of some of the business pertaining to it. SIH groups basically get a budget and then their supervisor says, “do whatever, just don’t burn it down.” They might have decided “no freshmen” for this year. Or Housing could have failed to put it on there by accident.

As for Welch… no clue. It’s the absolute worst place to make friends as a freshman (only 25 residents AND it’s an all-quiet dorm, meaning no loud activities or fun in the hallway) so I can’t imagine it was popular with freshmen anyhow. I went in there once with my friends to check it out and it was kind of like walking through a graveyard. Maybe they realized it’s not a healthy environment for new students and switched it to upperclassmen-only.

FURTHERMORE: Live in Mudge, kids. I’m going to be one of the SIH members in the A100 house inside Mudge. We’re hosting awesome activities.

Thank you for all of your answers!
I was interested in Mudge or Morewood particularly because I visited those places before. Having in-dorm tutoring or underground cafe really made me interested in those places.

I can’t wait.

Battle…

There’s tutoring at Donner as well…and you can attend tutoring in any of the dorms - not simply those you are residing. Donner has large rooms.
The Academic Support Services also has daytime tutoring in small groups and individual appts.

Underground at Morewood is very convenient…that said the food is greasy and sucks relative to other on campus venues. You will tire of eating at the Underground…trust me…same for Schatz (other than sunday brunch).

Mudge is highly sort after…it fills to the first 300 or so requesting it… great rooms, private bathroom and good community seems to unfold every year in Mudge (not that there’s not the same elsewhere)!

Personally I think people mistakingly select Stever b/c of the A/C…you don’t need A/C that often, the rooms are ridiculously small…and with a physician’s note for allergies/asthma, you can install a window A/C (they do it for you) in any campus dorm…a little known secret…we missed that secret until my second child was at Pre-college-- his roomie had an A/C for this reason - lucky break for the summer in Pittsburgh.

underground does suck but it’s convenient when it’s like 20 degrees out and you really don’t want to put on your snow boots. Sometimes I just want a gatorade or something to study with and it’s a ridiculously long trek from Mudge to anywhere else other than the Underground.

i live in morewood and i tried to make it a point not to eat in the underground. But then along came finals last semester, and with them the underground… 24 hours a day and with free coffee between 8pm and 8am. The night (if you can call it that) before my 8:30am 3d calculus final I was up studying until 2:30 or so. Then i got hungry and thought what the hell and went downstairs to use a late night block and talk with some of my friends, but the next thing I knew it was 4am and I was jittery from caffeine and my friends were calling it a night so that they could wake up for their 1pm final…

Not the brightest move i could have made, but definitely the most convenient.

Even if you never go to the Underground, Morewood is still the most convenient location on campus. When the blizzard was in full swing and I had my RA interview’s, I didn’t even bother putting on a coat… i just walked down the hall. When i need to print something at 3am from the cluster, i’ll occasionally put shoes on. When I need money from an ATM, there’s one downstairs. Probably the only time i ever wish I lived in Donner is when I have to wake up early saturday and sunday mornings for buggy rolls and every extra minute of sleep is precious… or similarly when I wake up at 9:35 for my 9:30 class.

The obvious solution though? live in stever/mudge/morewood and don’t schedule any classes or make any commitments before 3pm.

The underground actually has one of the best cheesesteaks in Pittsburgh. (Yes, I’ve been to mitchells tavern, those are good also) Some of the food there sucks, but the burgers/fries/cheesesteaks are good. Not healthy, but good. It’s run by Guiffultys (sp)

also *** is stever? it’s called NEW HOUSE :D

New House became Stever in the summer of 2008.
