I think Gullifty’s only provides the deserts for the Underground.

Yeah. They do the Killer Kookie and like an ice cream sundae type thing. I don’t know if they do the whole menu though, I’m pretty sure it’s culinart.

Oh, did Aramark finally lose the contract for CMU? That might explain why people on here aren’t complaining about the food as much as my friends and I used to.

Yeah, Aramark was exchanged out for some other company and then CulinArt took over at the beginning of (I think) this school year? The food’s been a lot better. It’s still not amazing, but it’s pretty good, and I love the campus sushi place.

Accepted students sleeping bag weekend will be

How do I know this?
I got an email asking me to host and listed a whole bunch of dates and next to April 11 it had ** Admitted Student Sleeping Bag Weekend

I don’t know if you guys can access this?

Give the link Cahier provides above…on that page is another embedded link

ENROLL NOW-- bookmark it…b/c next week you can use that link to submit your deposit online and be one of the first people in line for housing…

Wow, great information about the various dorms! I’m still trying to decide between Morewood and Mudge. ED applicant here. =)

Cahier - Thanks for that link and info. Yes, I can access the link.

Yeah I’m having a tough time between Morewood and Mudge

If you’re an ED applicant, I’d heavily recommend Mudge. You’ll get first pick of the great floors (A-2 and A-3) and they’re two of the most coveted floors in any school dorm anywhere. C2, C3, B2 and B3 are also pretty great floors too!

Plus we’ve won house wars several years in a row.

I’m also a Special Interest Housing leader for the dorm next year, so we have a ton of fun activities planned. Not that I’m biased towards Mudge or anything. (I’m totally not.)

Hey completelykate, are the dorms in Mudge you mentioned the prime rooms/quads?

I have to get a standard double room, because the tuition is already so expensive for me. Do you know which (if there are any) on-campus dorms have private bathrooms for standard double rooms?

I’m trying to grasp what the restrooms are like for the regular dorms. Is it one giant restroom per floor? Or are there two restrooms at each end of the hallway? How many people have to share on restroom? And, does the hot water ever “run out” in the shower or is that not a problem?

Also, do you know if we’re able to adjust our own room temperatures or is the temperature the same for everyone? I’m the type of person who likes the room to be really warm, and it gets really cold in Pittsburgh…

Here’s the link to next year’s housing rates:

Here’s a link to all housing types – including a visual:
[Housing Facilities](http://www.housing.cmu.edu/Facilities/)

Prime means bathroom inside the room (shared with another room – 3-4 students to the bathroom)
Standard means community bathroom down the hall 10-16 people – with multiple showers/toilets.
Quads are cheapest room type-(less than that budgeted on your fin aid package) but very few of these exist and they almost all involve a bunk bed.

Prime bathrooms: Mudge
Standards: Donner, Stever, Morewood

First-year Housing

The following buildings will be designated first-year living areas for the 2010-2011 academic year:

* Boss House
- Donner Hall
- Hamerschlag House
- London Terrace Apartments
- Morewood Gardens E-tower
- Mudge House
- Scobell House
- Shirley Apartments
- Stever House

To my knowledge, a prime double in Mudge will always have “suite style living” where the bathroom is shared by two other people, which isn’t bad, since in most standards elsewhere you share your bathroom with the whole floor. But I don’t know of any standard rooms in mudge-- we only have a couple public restrooms so I don’t think there are any others. The one exception I know are my friends down the hall here on A-2, who have the only Standard on the floor. Their bathroom is technically the “floor bathroom,” a public womens’ bathroom on the end, but since we all have our own private bathrooms no one ever goes in there and they get it to themselves.

If you are looking for cheap rooming though, a quad or triple in Mudge is the cheapest, and you are guaranteed to be on A-2 or A-3, which are the “good” floors. I picked it for money reasons.

The hot water doesn’t run out in any dorm. Don’t worry about water.

The room temp is adjustable in Stever and Mudge to my knowledge. I dunno if Morewood is the same, I haven’t checked. Stever has AC and this is supposedly why people love it so much, but in reality, if you’ve got a fan by your window in September you’ll be just fine. The AC is way overrated.

I remember we had a “thermostat” which loosely controlled the temperature. It was more of just a controller for the steam heat, changing how much steam was allowed into the heater every 30/60 minutes it would flow through. In Donner my thermostat controlled both my room and a neighbor’s, though in Scobel and Shady Oak I’m pretty sure it was just my room (those didn’t even have a fake thermostat, it was just a valve for the heaters).

where there is hot water, you never have to worry about it running out. oddly enough, certain showers in morewood put out hot water (and it’s glorious) and others don’t.

the best thermostat for your room (if you’re not in an AC’d building) is probably going to be your window. Basically no matter what the temperature is, your room will be hottest when it’s closed, and coldest (and windiest) when it’s open. Right now it’s 2am and my windows are fully open and it feels great… but that’s getting me nervous for the higher temperatures that will eventually come. As long as you don’t mind wasting the school’s energy there is really no reason why your room shouldn’t be the perfect temperature during the winter months.

I’m a big fan of public bathrooms… but really only because the employees do a great job of cleaning them (occasionally there will be something absolutely disgusting in one of the 5-6 sinks or elsewhere, but it’s gone by 10am the next morning). On the complete opposite end of the spectrum would be fraternity bathrooms, which are also public, but not cleaned by paid employees. HUUUGGGEE difference. The personal restrooms are somewhere in between i’d say…

Edit: Idk how i forgot to mention this since it is the only reason i clicked on this thread, but there is now a huge banner welcoming admitted class of '14 students on the parking garage off of forbes. get excited ;)

I’ve seen personal bathrooms that were absolutely disgusting. Mostly in guys’ rooms. (You slobs.) In Mudge there is a cleaning staff that comes to clean private bathrooms once a week and restock your toilet paper and that sort of thing, but you’ve got to keep it clean in the meanwhile.

Doesn’t anyone have the sense of adventure, new experiences, being surprised? If you know everything in advance, the magic just isn’t there anymore.

Well being surprised with a delightful year in Scobell isn’t exactly a dream come true. I rather get a sense of whats good and whats not so I can make the best of my four years.

If you get stuck in Scobell, 'shlag or london terrace, you can pretty much kiss your freshman social life goodbye. They’re very small, S and Hamerschlag are all-male, and London is just out in the middle of nowhere-- you need to take a bus to get home.

Haha then I am soooo glad I applied ED

Mudge keeps sounding better and better. I will prob make my final decision on the weekend.

Scobel and Hammerschlag won’t kill your social life. You’ll have tons of other guys to be friends with on your hall, and most of the people I know in them actually wound up staying friends with those people well into their later years. I lived in Donner freshman year and the only time I remember the guys on my side going over to the girl’s side was one guy stole another’s box of pop tarts and got him to chase him all over the dorm. If you want to meet members of the opposite sex then get involved in clubs, go to parties, or any of the other multitude of methods to meet people.

London Terrance is a bit of a schlep and there’s not nearly the opportunity to meet people in your freshman year. None of the Oakland Apartments are that bad, but I don’t think I’d recommend them for freshmen (especially since you’ll be on the meal plan).

(What bus do you even take to get to London Terrace? Two of my friends lived there sophomore year and didn’t ever take one.)
