Are there Living Learning Communities or theme dorms ? And if so, did freshman find them beneficial? My son is hoping to attend as a music major and I wonder if there is a dorm where a lot of other music majors live. Thanks,

“What bus do you even take to get to London Terrace? Two of my friends lived there sophomore year and didn’t ever take one.”

There’s one that pulls up in front of Morewood. It’ll take you to any dorm that’s considered outside the general campus area. My friends sometimes prefer to walk to LT, but if it’s dark outside they’ll ride the bus since there’ve been several armed robberies in the area lately. The bus also comes really frequently, so sometimes it’s nice to not have to walk.

Is that a bus run by CMU? I remember them running that occasionally when I was around at the school, but generally just found it to be more effort coordinating times than it was worth.

The only part of walking back to Shady Oak I remember being slightly iffy was when I’d cut through the WQED parking lot late at night (there were some high school kids shooting BB guns at people passing through late at night). Generally if it was pretty late I’d just walk down Morewood until I hit 5th instead of taking the shortcut.

Yeah, it’s the CMU bus, but I think they added 2-3 more buses to the circuit this year so there’s one every five minutes or so. Generally the area’s pretty safe at night, but the Morewood/5th area has for some reason seen a spike in armed crime, so it’s not necessarily somewhere you want to be walking home alone through anymore, especially if you’re female.

I’m going! During the COD one on april10-whatever, can’t get up to look.

Quick question… some schools will reimburse ticket rate etc. Does CMU? (I still haven’t received my acceptance packet, that’s why I ask)

Where did you sign up for the COD weekend? By calling 412.268.4646?

I went to a COD weekend in January! It was amazing =) I didn’t know there was one in April or I would have def. wanted to go to that one to meet some possible future classmates

^Hey, I went to one in Nov but I’m still gonna try to go to this one. They say those who haven’t gone before get the “priority” in flight payments. Why can’t you go to this one also?

So they DO give flight reimbursements?

Yeah, for COD (diversity students) domestic flights, more than 200 miles away, costing less than $750. I’m from TX and they payed it all which was I think about $400, sent me a link to print out my tickets. Just register and then call the number they give to get the flight in order. They also covered someone from Oregon, he looked white but was like “no…I’m____”. No clue what he was, jewish? And they covered a lot from Cali that I saw.

Planes wear me the hell out but w00t! reading time!

I already have a jacket and shirt from them, you best bet I’m wearing 'em. Man, I’m so excited.

I thought I read somewhere before that you can only go to one COD weekend? Not too sure, but I’m all for it if I can get to go again. I <3 CMU!

ETA: Just checked the dates and I’m actually visiting another possible college that weekend. Sad I can’t visit CMU again but happy about seeing the other college! :)

I know some that went to many O_o. Maybe it’s just something to be avoided to let others who haven’t visited. I’ll find out. My little card says that those who haven’t visited before get priority but it’s still open to other.

The sophomores getting the shaft thing is true… Everyone I know ended up in apartments. My number for the sophomore class was #1000 out of like #1036. So, I was at the VERY END to choose a place to live. They actually ran out of housing before they got to my number, so I ended up on the open assignment list.

I ended up securing a prime single in welch on the first floor. Im not complaining. Everyone else I know though, the walk is kinda horrible in the winter months.

about the housing forms…i filled mine out on time but my dad faxed the signature a day late (im a minor so i couldnt sign it). is this going to be a problem?

Metal, trust me, those people in the Oakland Apartments will be plenty happier than those on the third floor of Scobel sharing a double with only one window.

Yeah, thats true. The rooms in Welch are tiny- but its close and im kind of lazy/very intolerant of cold.

I just dont understand the logic of choosing something like fairfax. If they bought the apartment separate from CMU in the same building, and split the rent that way, itd be much, much less.

Fairfax is a bit out there, but I remember looking at apartments and found Shady Oak not to be that bad in comparison to the closest apartment buildings. The place was in good condition, the rooms were big, and heat/electricity/water/cable/internet (CMU network, not cable) were all included. Also, CMU TV.

None of the closer places got back to me. The ones that did mentioned that they wouldnt rent to undergrads.
