Accomodations in Granville

I just thought I'd post this here in case anybody is heading to Granville over Feb break.

We usually stay at a B&B that we love - but we (three of us) are stopping by there during Feb break for a brief visit and the B&B was booked. (darn)

Anyway, I booked two rooms on Priceline at the Marriott Courtyard in Newark for only $50/room. Regular price $99/room. So, if you aren't afraid of Priceline I believe that this is the only hotel that will come up if you bid Newark 2 1/2 stars.

Thanks for the info --- I am going to try it for 2/18!

kelsmom:
Do you know how to use Priceline? I sometimes hesitate to suggest it unless people understand it.

The main thing you need to know is you have to click on the "Deeper Discounts - Name Your Own Price" button under the "hotels" tab to get to the bidding area.

Also, understand that your room is not-refundable and purchased the moment it accepts your bid. In theory you also have no choice about the room (king, queens, etc), but I've always found hotels to be good about that.

Good luck!

Yes, thanks. I used Priceline last summer for Chicago. I asked for a boutique hotel in the GoldCoast area & got a great Omni for $65 on a weekday! Bed issue is why we've never tried it for a family trip, but it's not a problem for this trip --- D will be spending the night at Denison, so I'll be solo.

Have a great time! :)

Thanks for the tip! I usually shy away from Priceline because I like to have control over where I'm at, but there aren't too many options in Newark and that's a great deal at the Courtyard. We're going out over Easter and staying at Cherry Valley resort with the new indoor waterpark. My 10 y/o is looking forward to that more than seeing her sister at Denison!

Cherry Valley is apparently pretty lively now with the waterpark. And expensive! My sister just took her kids to one of those waterpark places in Niagara Falls and they had a great time. Sounds fun.

OK - we are flying into Columbus on Sun Feb 18, taking the DU shuttle, staying at either the Buxton Inn or the Granville Inn (saves us the expense and hassle of renting a car). Any thoughts on which one? Any tips on where to eat Sun night? Other advice?

The admissions office has been so helpful and friendly. S and I are really looking forward to the visit.

Esquette:

Granville Inn is better, and theoretically walkable - but I think our B&B is even better (Fraley House), but you'll need a car for that for sure. I'm worried about you not having a car - the climb up the campus hill is a killer! You'll be exhausted!

The choices to eat dinner in Granville are:
Granville Inn - Pretty pricey, service iffy
Brews - Pub food, good.

We like a restaurant in Newark called The Manna. http://www.themannarestaurant.com/ (You'd need a car for sure.) Both that and Granville Inn are sort of for special meals.

I generally hate chains, but the usual suspects are available in Newark (Olive Garden, Chipotles, etc.)

Have a great trip!

I've stayed at both. I like the Buxton Inn better It's pretty charming. Rooms are nice.
With no car you are kinda stuck eating in town but the resturants are good. Granville Inn is OK but is pricey and the service can be a bit indifferent but when it's good it is good. Brews is pretty good too. There's a pizza place called Elm's that isn't bad for fun pizza food. The walk isn't to far but as weenie said there is a huge uphill. I'd dress warm and I'd probably walk to it but I walk 3-4 miles a day so the walk isn't that bad to me. It's extremely charming and they all are very friendly. Enjoy your visit.

Esquette, we almost crossed paths with you! D planned to stay overnight at Denison that very Sunday night. Little did we know, though, that there are no more overnights until admitted students nights. Bummer! We have visited campus, but D has found overnights to be a great way to tell if she'd really feel comfortable at a given school. Unfortunately, all her time off is Feb. & March, which seems to be just the wrong time for overnights! Ah, well ... guess if she is accepted & gets an appealing financial package, we'll just have to squeeze in a trip then. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for your advice! The uphill walk would only bother me -- S is a 3 sport athlete who is used to waiting on mom ;) But now I am rethinking the car, esp since we booked an earlier flight on Sunday, which will give us time to drive around the area a bit. Prob good to see what's around, esp if Granville stores will be closed on Sun.

Too bad you won't be there kelsmom, but I understand. We found overnights to be valuable for S#1. We visited schools for the tour/info session and "gut check" test first (S#2 did the tours too), then returned for an overnight if the interest remained (he stayed at 4 diff schools). S#1 ended up with 5 visits (4 staying on campus) to the school where he is now a happy freshman. Seeing what daily life would be like was a positive factor in both his choice and his successful adjustment to campus life. So we are following this model for S#2!

Between Columbus and Granville is a town called Pickerington (about 15 minutes from Granville. They have a nice movie theatre and stores to shop in. There is a nice mexican place an a place called Skyline (cincinnati style chili) and the best ice cream on EARTH. It's called Graeters. It has chocalate chips the size of blocks in it. Well worth the visit. There are a few other resturants. We usually drive there to eat it is a little nicer than Heath and Newark. Enjoy your visit.

sideways - Is there a mall there? Is it closer than Easton? We visited Easton for the first time last time we were in Granville and I simply could not believe it. I mean, it was pretty amazing! Disney comes to shopping comes to Ohio.

Anyway, son often needs something at the mall and we will be there on the 17th for a quick visit.

Thanks.

It's more of a strip place. A theatre Barnes and Noble Linen and Things and I can't remember the rest.Ther is a strip center on the other side of exit that has Wal Mart and a Outdoors store and a ton of smaller stores. There is a smokey bones rib resturant and a couple of other chain places. There is also a custard place that is better than the one in Granville but the Ice Cream at Graeters is the best. They have a website where they explain how it's made. Not very diet but really good. My son does go to Easton( he has a car this year) and just loves it. I don't like him driving so far. They see the movies at the IMAX. Shop and have dinner. I love that mall! The stores are great! They have a Trader Joes (speciality grocery store) that I love.Easton is best if you are looking for clothes I don't think there is anything good at Pickerington clothes wise.

Hope you have a great visit.

If you don't mind me asking, what are your children majoring in at Denison, sideways and weenie (or planning to major it)? S is not certain, but interested in the communications major, which seems to be highly regarded.

esquette: My son in majoring in economics and political science and minoring in music and math. (Think that's enough?!!!)

Mine is a Film Production (Cinema Studies) and English (Double Major). With a concentration in Creative Writing. He took a communications class last semester and really enjoyed it. He considered a double with communications and film but really enjoys writing. He says the communications dept is pretty good.

Umm, yup, that's enough to do! Thanks for the info - I'm looking forward to learning more about a few of the departments on our visit. In any event, I'm a believer in deciding what to major in after trying a variety of courses and picking what you love most -- the liberal arts model seems to be serving your kids well!

It's a great place for that. He spent last year and this year trying a variety of courses trying to figure out what he wanted to double major in. Film he knew but he tried philosophy courses , religion courses and communication courses. They had a great selection of interesting classes and seminars for him to take. I think Denison was a great choice for him. He is extremely happy.
