Does UW make decisions based on majors?

lets say i put down poli sci on my app and my friend put business. Does that mean I had a better chance of getting in? i got accepted and my friend got rejected, and he tells me the only reason i got in is because of my major. is this true?

No, it says specifically on their questions for applying that your major has nothing to do with your acceptance. Whether you believe that or not, is a whole different story.

but thats strange because my friend has higher stats than me and he got rejected.

He may have had bad essays or something. UW looks at the whole application, not just GPA and SAT scores.

thanks! i need to tell my friend this because he thinks i took the easy way out on my application

Congrats on your admission. If UW bases admission on majors, I think we’d see a lot more applications to open majors (walk into advising, declare, sign form, voila!) than competitive ones (grades, personal statement…maybe voila~).

I was told that it does play a major part of admission for those who are transfer students. They want to see that the person has been taking classes specific to their major and has been preparing to go into their major.

@Xavi’s post: That is true for transfers! However, for freshmen (most of the board), it is completely disregarded.

Yup, yup, yup!!

Interesting post for the transfers.

Maybe there’s hope for me!
