I can use all the help I can get. Thank you in advance!
“In some states, legislators have debated whether teenagers should be required to a maintain a “C” grade average in school before receiving a driver’s license. Some people think this would be a good policy because having passing grades shows that students are responsible enough to be good drivers. Other people think such a policy would not be appropriate because they see no relationship between grades in school and driving skills. In your opinion, should teenagers be required to maintain a “C” average in school before receiving a driver’s license?”
Getting a driver's license is a rite of passage for many teenagers, but it is often thought of as a right as opposed to a responsibility. It is a huge step toward independence for teenagers. I believe high schoolers should maintain a "C" average to qualify for a driver's license. Driving is a huge responsibility that should not be taken lightly.
Maintaining a "C" average shows that a student is hardworking, responsible, and disciplined. A student does not have to be a genius to maintain a "C" average, but they do need to be responsible which is a large part of driving. Teenagers are notorious for being irresponsible, but I believe a minimum grade requirement would increase responsibility toward schoolwork. Being able to get a license would be a huge incentive for lazy students to work harder.
Safe driving requires a lot of responsibility. Teenagers already make up such a large portion of automobile accidents that something needs to be done. If a student has no respect for their schoolwork, and subsequently their future, then how can we expect him or her to respect driving laws? These students need to mature before they can be trusted on the road.
For many teenagers, getting a license means getting a job. If a student is so behind in their work that they cannot maintain at least a "C" average then they are not ready for the distraction of having a job. It is very difficult to pay for gas and insurance without an after-school job. It is also very difficult to work after school while maintaining good grades even as a responsible student. If anything, the current laws are doing a disservice to "F" and "D" students that cannot afford the distraction that comes with having a license.
Driving should be a privilege that comes with being a productive student. Often times, driving distracts students from their schoolwork and can make grades drop. Maintaining a "C" average in order to get a driver's license would keep the roads safer and kids focused on schoolwork.
Any advice is welcome, thank you again!!
