Is it true that it's not as important because there's no baseline of comparison for the ACT science section on the SAT? I heard this from a friend and I'm pretty skeptical, although it would help me...

For many colleges the main consideration is composite so it makes a difference. Some, usually from the east, who generally get far more SAT scores than ACT have mentioned that they give more weight to the math and English sections than the other sections (probably because they consider those two sections the easier to compare to the SAT), although that does not mean science is ignored. I am aware of two, Rose-Hulman and Georgia Tech that use only the math and English scores and ignore composite, science and reading (yes, those two science/engineering schools ignore the science section for determining admission).

Thanks drusba that makes sense/ is what I thought.

Question 2: Is it because ACT lets you choose what scores you send, that SAT they look at superscore?

Some do superscore ACT but it is just the opposite of SAT -- majority do on SAT, majority don't on ACT. The reason why is difficult to fathom. Some have suggested it has to do with the fact that you can send one ACT score without others and with SAT all get sent. The problem with that theory is that the superscoring of SATs started long ago when the College Board allowed you to choose which scores to send. Flowing from the ACT choice factor is the reason put forth by some that schools considered the economics involved-- to send multiple ACT tests results in a charge for each test whereas to send all SAT's is one charge, but I doubt cost is the real reason for the rule. My guess is that no one really remembers why it is the way it is and changing it at most colleges would require college bureaucrats to do something that it is almost impossible for them to do -- change a long-standing procedure.

drusba-are you sure that Georgia Tech throws out half of the ACT scores? D got a 34 composite, but a 36 math and 35 english. Her low score was science, not that a 32 is really low. Do they use this for Presidential Scholarship as well and cross ref it with SAT scores? Now this makes more sense, when D contacted admissions in early OCT they asked her what her scores were and when she told them they told her to make sure her App was in before Oct. 31 to be considered for the Pres scholarship. She has received e-mail every day this week, but no real answers. Many who have posted have already received their packets.

Don't know what they do on Presidential Scholarship although I suspect they do the same thing as they do with admission. For admission they do a conversion/comparison of ACT to SAT and use only the English and math sections of the ACT to come up with equivalent SAT (math/critical reasoning) score that is used for admission.
