ACT score-- Okay?

So my ACT score is a 34 Composite with 35 in English, 34 in Math, 35 in Reading, 32 in Science. I got a 9 in writing, making the English + Writing only a 32.

Are my writing and science scores a red flag? Here are my other scores:
AP euro: 5
APUSH: 5
AP Lang: 5
AP Bio: 4 (haha i was sick. stomach flu :( )
Bio M: 780
Math II: 800
US History: 750

In addition, my AP Lang teacher can attest to my writing and has told me that I am the best writer in her classes (she is writing me a recommendation).

Am I OK? My top choices as of now are UCLA, Northwestern, and Washington University and I want to major in either Bio, Biochem, Neurosci, or Cogsci. (I'll probably end up double majoring)

I really don't mean to sound obnoxious; I just want either reassurance or advice! Sorry for any grammatical errors in this information :)

Yes, your ACT scores are okay. Just focus on working on your essay because that is what will set you apart from other candidates.

I got a 34 composite as well and only got an 8 on the writing section–I was shocked, because writing is what I personally feel I am best at. You have to remember that the writing section is fairly subjective and is just the opinion of two (sometimes three) people who skim your essay in as short a time as possible. Your score is great, so don’t worry. Be sure to write amazing essays on your applications to prove that you are a good writer!

Thank you!! :slight_smile: Oh my gosh, me too! It’s crazy. I think I get caught up in style.

Your score is definitely within range for any top school admission. The question is how is the rest of your credential.
Nevertheless, it does not mean a higher score would not slightly increase your chance.

Now that you have gotten a great score, focus on the most important part of your application- Essays

Is a 33 in range for top schools as well?

34 ACT = 2220–2280 SAT
33 ACT = 2140–2210 SAT

Your ACT score is definitely above admission median for all schools and may even be above 75% for some very competitive schools.

I hate when people ask this, no ■■■■, a 34 is great.

What is your career goal?

are you instate for UCLA?

edited to add… I see that you are not a Calif resident. Have your parents said that they will pay the OOS costs for UCLA?

@mom2collegekids‌

 1. I want to go pre-med. If that doesn’t work out, I want to be involved in neuro-prosthetics.

I actually am a California resident!

Your stats are on par with the colleges you are applying to.

If you have time, I would recommend taking the SAT as well. If Science is your weakest point on the ACT, SAT might be a better option for you.

And yet you wrote on another thread

@erin’s dad I recently moved. But I still am considered a CA resident.

@Erin’s Dad

lol idk how to tag you

Unfortunately I can’t be tagged. I made this username on the previous incarnation of CC and tagging wasn’t even considered. The apostrophe and the space make tagging impossible (so far).

Are you sure you’d be considered in-state for UCLA? It doesn’t seem like from their FAQs.
