Is there a post already about programs that allow students in their acting programs to audition for musicals? I would like to apply to both programs but if I were admitted to an MT program and couldn’t do straight plays, I would be unhappier than being in an acting program where I couldn’t do musicals.
Otterbein lets everyone audition for all mainstage shows.
Yes, son is Junior BFA Acting major at Otterbein and has been cast in 3 musicals, and has had songs in all three roles Many MT are cast in plays too!
At Coastal Carolina University Acting, Physical Theatre, and MT’s all audition for straight plays AND Musicals.
My daughter has been accepted for Acting at Wright State U, UArts, OKCU and Rider and all made it very clear that Acting majors are encouraged to audition for all the musicals and are regularly cast. This was also true for MT majors who could audition for straight plays. Seems like most of the programs that include Acting and MT have a lot of crossover between the programs.
I think it fairly common for BFA acting and MT students (at schools that have both) to be able to audition for plays and musicals. Perhaps it would be shorter to say are there schoo,s where you CAN’T. (I don’t know of any)
Belmont University does not allow the acting students to audition for musicals. Their MT department is housed under the College of Music and the Acting department is Theatre and Dance. However some of the Theatre shows do have singing in them, just not full blown musicals.
Fredonia’s acting and MT students must audition for all plays and musicals. They can also audition for dance productions.
