I was a little confused as to what to write in the additional information section of the common application. What is ideally written in it?
also, i wanted to send a resume and i have some questions regarding it.
1.should i even send one? does yale like reading resumes?
2.can the resume be written in this additional information section? if not then how to send it(by mail or what)?

The Additional Information section is the ideal place to plug in your resume.

I think the common app already covers most part of your resume. Don’t try to repeat the same content. If you want to send additional info, you can add it in additional information section. Usually a resume is not required.

^^You are correct that students definitely shouldn’t duplicate in the “Additional Info” section information that appears elsewhere in the application. But for students who don’t have enough room on the Activities grid in the Common App, the Additional Info section is the place to elaborate (in resume form) on activities/awards/ECs/work experience.

Is it common to try and put a second short essay or another bit of writing in the additional info section?

It’s not a wise idea. The place to show off your writing abilities is in the required essays.

what if I wanted to further explain a significance behind one of my ECs? Wouldn’t that go in the additional info section?

That sounds to me like a topic for an essay. Admissions officers have thousands and thousands of essays to read. I don’t suspect they take kindly to an applicant who tries to sneak an extra one in.

So, in that case, would it be better to simply leave the additional info section blank, if there really is no additional info i’d like to put?
Would leaving it empty leave a bad impression on the adcoms for an applicant?

hachan14: I’m rethinking this a bit. I think it would be fine for you to use the Additional Information section to provide a little more explanation about your EC. It can certainly be hard to fit what you want to say in that little grid. A brief explanation would not be too much different from including a short activity resume in that section, something many students do. But I think it should be pretty short and sweet; I’d steer clear of a full-blown essay on significance.

Another possibility: Could you ask your counselor to discuss what you’ve gained from this EC in his/her recommendation?

Many kids leave the Additional Information section blank. It’s not a problem at all.

wjb: the additional info blurb i have is ~250 words; that shouldnt counted as a “full blown essay”, right? Indeed, its quite similar to the short activity box (although different activity)

I dont think my counselor could discuss it really, because I havent really discussed the personal significance of this activity (it leads back to much b4 i was in HS), and since im an international student, our counselors themselves dont quite fully understand these processes, and generally write pretty generic recs (which is an obvs. disadvantage for us)

btw, if u dont mind me asking, are you a HS or post-secondary student yourself?

I’m the parent of a Yale student.

^ hey, thanks for ur input =)

My pleasure. Good luck with your application.
