Additional Information Section on the Common App

Hello!

I have a quick question:

Should I use the additional section to explain my “C” average that will appear on my transcript for my junior year Physics Honors course?

My situation: I am considering adding an extra essay to my application, for my work ethnic in my Physics class does not demonstrate my ability to succeed with college-level work. Colleges will see that my other science classes I did well in (Biology and Chemistry I). In my senior year I am taking AP Chemistry to build upon my demonstrated Chemistry I abilities.

I am planning to major in musical theatre / acting, so colleges will probably care more about my audition. However, some of my schools weigh 50% academics and 50% arts for admissions.

If colleges review my application holistically (as most do), I wouldn’t see a point to this essay because colleges will see my excellent grades in other sciences and maybe realize Physics just was not my forte.

Any thoughts?

IMO, I wouldn’t. If you have a particular reason why you got a C (illness during final, family emergency etc), then have your GC say something about it in his/her recommendation letter. If it comes from you, it could sound like you’re whining or making excuses. If you got a C because you’re just not good at it, then I’d leave it be. The AO can see that you are applying as a theater major, and that the rest of your record is good. No need to highlight a negative.
