i've already submitted my application and my two teacher recs have been mailed in, but my AP euro teacher, with whom i have a really good relationship, is a princeton graduate and i'm sure she would be willing to write me a recommendation. would it be appropriate to send in another recommendation in addition to the two teacher recommendations i already sent out? i really didn't think of it until now.

only send in an additional rec if it is amazing. don't simply send in a mediocre/average rec just because the recommender is a princeton grad.

do you guys think 2 extra recs is excessive? or is it ok if they all talk about different things?

yes thats excessive.

I am of the school that one additional rec is excessive, but that's just me. If you do decide to send an additional one, it better be SO UTTERLY AMAZING and legitimately PERSONAL/REVEALING, or else it will only hurt your application.

If you truly were close with this teacher, a hand-written note to the admissions office with maybe a paragraph about why you're an exceptional applicant might be okay... Then it'll be like she wanted to send it herself, and just did without prompting. I dunno about these things though...

it would make my life so much easier if there was an admissions officer in this forum like there are in some of the others i.e. tufts and JHU

ugh, if im applying for BSE is it really bad then if i dont have a math/sci rec?

^Yes, that's very bad.

My general opinion is that an additional rec may be excessive in some cases. They add to the clutter of the application?

wow, this is really interesting.

my original presumption was that everyone would be dying to add an extra rec or two to make their case. i mean, coaches and other adult figures in ones life would seemingly make it imperative to get that extra word in.

on the website though, it says that extra letters (other than the optional one) only help if it adds to ur application. so i think in that case i guess ill submit two extra recs.

I did one additional rec and only because it was from my engineering teacher who i have had for two years, and since i am applying for engineering i figured it was important

I don't think an additional rec hurts as much as most people think it does. I'm of the opinion that you should take every advantage possible in such a competitive process. The universities as institutions advise against sending them because they just want to save time, but I don't think the human reading your app will really hold it against you because of one thing most people seem to be forgetting: YOU NEVER KNOW HOW GOOD/PERSONAL/REVEALING A REC IS UNLESS THEY SHOW IT TO YOU IN ADVANCED, WHICH MOST DON'T.

well yeah, thats the thing, i mean, if you know you can get an extra rec from someone who has seen you do something amazing, then you might as well include it. i mean, for the extra rec ill ask for from my quiz bowl advisor, id hope he talk about how i took over the club when the captain was battling senioritis. when it comes to facts like those, then you can prolly judge for urself if an extra rec will do you good.

the only thing im wondering is what the benefits of sending two extra recs is, which the princeton faq disparages only the second extra rec has nothing new to say about you. i mean, my recs are gonna focus more on the things i do and include what kinda person i am, but if you are a student thats doesnt have a particularly intimate relationship with ur teachers it wont necessarily work out.

Would it be wise to get an additional recommendation from a scientist you have been working closely with for the past year?

^ I would think that would be wise! I'm certainly going to do so! I have two teachers who I am very intimate with, and then a researcher who I will be working with this summer (I'm a junior). :)

for an additional rec i used the common app sheet and gave it to one of my teachers, is that fine?

for the most part i thought this teacher would know some personal characteristics of me and more of my personality

?

I also have the same question. My son submitted an abstract of the research he's done for the past year, and his two teacher recs. Would it be too late for him to send in a rec from his mentor? It's a great rec that he has already sent to other schools.

I don't think it would be too late. They'd probably just add it to his file.

Princeton relies heavily on recs, at least that's what they used to state on their application under Dean Fred. Our son sent one additional rec from the director of his Governor's School and it apparently contributed to his early Princeton acceptance. One additional, outstanding rec won't hurt and may very well help your case. Be highly selective, though, about who will write that additional rec.
