I got my diagnosis back when I was, like, 5 or whatever, and if anything it got to be more of a problem in adulthood. Either that or I started managing my autism well enough that my ADHD is standing out in comparison. Whichever it is, it’s driving me insane. When I sit down to do homework, it can easily take two or three hours to force myself to actually focus on working, if I ever actually get to working at all. It wasn’t so bad in CC when you wrote all the papers the night before anyway, but now that I’m in university I feel like I’m slipping more and more. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there anything besides meds that helped (I’m not against meds, it’s just not an option at the moment)?
Yeah… I have similar issues (ADHD, Autism Spectrum) although I somehow manage it and you it to my advantage. I procrastinate a lot, but then use my ability to hyper focus (which is one of the symptoms of ADHD) and I actually become more concentrated on my work than if I had tried to do it earlier.
In terms of long term projects and just managing it in general, I keep a calendar of what I have to do and assignments/due dates. I also have a very busy class and extra curricular schedule, which cuts back on some of the procrastination. If I know I only have x hours to do work today, then I make sure I allocate specific tasks to each of those hours. I can’t get distracted if there’s always something that I have to go to or do!
Many people with ASD + ADHD, or simply ADHD alone, suffer from time blindness. If you google strategies for coping with time blindnes you might find some ways to help you combat/compensate for this deficit.
