Admission chances

I have a sat score of 1960. CR- 580, WR- 610 and Maths- 770. What are my chances for NYU Stern . Other aspects of my application are very good.

SAT is too low for Stern, have you thought of applying as an economics major at NYU CAS.

Your scores are a bit too low.

move to chance page.

How much do we need for Stern then?? Actually I am a student from India and have the highest grade point. My co- curriculum and other required parts of application are very good.

2250+ is recommended to be even somewhat competitive

I’m not even expecting to get in with a 2360…

Which means its highly Competitive. Thanks everyone. I would surely work hard and try to increase my score by 200 points at least.
P.S.- Why does the official data show the range of SAT scores 1900- 2140

@Tu123g That’s NYU as a whole, not Stern, and Stern has been known to be increasingly selective each year.

Would Early Decision prove to be useful?

@Tu123g

ED accepts 10-15% more applicants.

I have heard that NYU Stern accepts 2000+ in ED but the GPA needs to be very good. Is it true?

@qwertyzxc I’ve known numerous Non-URM, Non-Asian Stern applicants get in with 2050-2100 scores. I’d say being 2250+ is really only a necessity if you are Asian. That makes up a large majority of the applicants, I imagine, so I guess your point still stands.

@renegade23 Stern is known for being one of the less racially focused colleges, hence it’s relatively high Asian populaiton (somewhere around 40%). Saying certain standards, especially something as significant as 150 SAT points, are necessary for a person of a specific nationality to be accepted is very skewed and barely accurate.

@Tu123g Most people accepted into Stern with a low SAT score make up for it with a high GPA, competitive class schedule, a set of outstanding extracurriculars, or something along those lines; therefore, having a 1960 significantly impacts your chances of acceptance. This however doesn’t mean you’re going to be automatically rejected. If you can compensate for your SAT score by being outstanding with respect to the average Stern applicant in any other field of your application, I’m sure you will have a decent chance.

Although, It would probably be easier to just retake the SAT (if you can) and put the effort necessary into studying to do well on it.

It’s very tough to get in 2000 - 2150 scores without having some kind of hook (athletics, first-gen, URM, legacy, etc.)

Yes Stern doesn’t really practice administrative action so you need to very high SATs. I know a good number of people in my class alone with perfect 2400 SATs and 36 ACTs.

I would characterize the majority of Stern to be Asian, Indian, and Jewish.

@qwertyzxc The average SAT score for Stern is a 1440. That probably puts the average somewhere in the 2100s range. I know it is competitive, but you are hyping it up way more than it really is.

Also, I highly doubt that Stern doesn’t practice affirmative action. Remember that its parent school is NYU. One of NYU’s biggest goals is diversity and I’m sure that mission leaks into Stern. I don’t think the large amount of Asians is a product of a lack of affirmative action, but just such a high number of Asian applicants. @SternFinance2020 I’m not saying they have a quota for them, but using simple logic if there is a set number of spots in a class and you have one race that has an extensive amount of applicants compared to other races, there will certainly be increased competition for those spots among that demographic compared to the others.

Mean SAT is ~1450 (1448 to be exact) and Median SAT is 1470. Median is a better reflection of the class because it shows that more of the class scores higher vs the outliers (outstanding athletes, students whose parents donated a lot of money) who got in with significantly less SATS / GPA than most people who got in.

A 1470 is about a 2200 on the 2400 scale. Scoring a 2200 on the SATs will get you to be at the 50th percentile of Stern students meaning half of the students at Stern score higher than that and half score lower. To be competitive for a school you generally want to be at the top half of this range especially if you are an international student or of Asian descent and OP is both international and Asian so he needs to be at the top of the pile to have a shot at Stern.

So nothing wrong with what I’m saying to OP and doesn’t seem like I am hyping anything up.

That’s a good point. I feel like we are essentially agreeing with each other, but maybe I am wrong. Haha, thanks for the reply

That sums up for me. I have given my SAT Jan attempt and waiting for the result. Moreover in the above conversation it is very well said NYU Stern does not focus on whether you are an asian, jewish or american. My cousin is doing MBA from NYU Stern and most of his class members are asians. Furthermore, Asians have that strong GPA with them and extremely difficult academic curriculum. But yes in the end SAT needs to be looked down upon. Thanks guys

@FreaksAndGeeks - No I haven’t thought about it but I surely will now. could you tell me their application requirements?
