I applied ED 1 to NYU and just got rejected, and I don’t mean to sound obnoxious but I really don’t get why. I have a 1480 SAT score, 2 subject tests(Math 2 & Physics) with okay-ish scores, I’m the President of the Model UN club, Editor of the yearbook, I have many awards etc in debates and quizzes, and I’m an international student but my grades are equivalent to a 4.0 GPA by US standards. I think I have fairly strong writing skills, so my essays were good, and I got them approved by several teachers etc and they all thought the essays were great. NYU was my dream college so kinda worked up about the rejection:
Any guesses as to why I didn’t get in?
Did you specify a particular major in Stern ? For example, finance is a very well respected & competitive major in Stern.
Also, what are your SAT subject test scores ?
Also, were you seeking financial aid ?
I got a 670 in Math 2 and 730 in Physics.
I put in undecided business major, but I did indicate an inclination towards finance and management
The 670 in Math 2 probably was viewed as a negative for a Stern applicant.
NYU Stern is very competitive so the 1480 SAT score probably did not help as much as you might have expected.
Also, NYU awards little grant aid money. If you were seeking substantial financial assistance than that may have impacted your application.
Aren’t NYU admission need-blind though?
Also, yeah, that makes sense, considering a Math subject test was highly recommended for Stern.
Thanks!
Nationality?
I don’t know whether or not NYU is need blind for admissions. NYU awards relatively little in financial aid grant money–most is just loans.
Do you know the average SAT score for NYU Stern ?
1470
I’m from India @airway1
That’s why! Your in the worst pool to be frank! You’d need 1500 plus to get in. @nj10501 … it goes back to how many Indians and Chinese they can take out of the application pool
According to NYU Stern’s website the mean (average) SAT score is 1468 & the acceptance rate last year was 11%.
22% of the class last year at NYU Stern was international students. In addition to an ultra competitive group of applicants from India, your SAT Math 2 subject test score is quite low for a business major interested in finance.
What’s your other choices?
University of Miami and Georgetown as of now. But after seeing the NYU result, I’m extremely sceptical about Georgetown.
Why not look at Villanova, Indiana or Michigan state
Also Fordham and Rutgers same recruiting as NYU and Columbia
NYU is only need-blind for domestic applicants, not internationals, but I also agree the stats are not that strong vs the Stern pool of applicants. As for essays - I don’t really know how easy it is to judge them. With just over 10% admissions rate for stern, it’s tough and something in the application needs to really stand out.
If you need significant financial aid, then you have to find business schools which award financial aid grants/scholarships to international students. (I do not know which schools do & do not.)
But your SAT score of 1480 makes you not competitive as an international applicant for any top 10 US business schools, in my opinion, based on average SAT scores for admitted students.
Consider the University of Richmond in Virginia. Fairfield University in Connecticut.
Babson College in Massachusetts has a large international student population (about 30%) and Bentley University has about 15% international students.
Indiana University, Michigan State University, Lehigh University, Fordham University, Rutgers-New Brunswick, University of Washington should accept you.
University of Arizona & Arizona State University should accept you & might award scholarship money.
You need to find business schools with an average SAT score about 100 points lower than your 1480 in order to have a reasonable chance for scholarship money IF that school gives grant aid to internationals.
Also, consider retaking the SAT subject test in math for a much higher score.
Have you considered any Canadian universities ? They tend to be much less expensive than US universities & it is easier to stay & work in Canada than the US for non-citizens.
Agree with the above posters. Main reasons were probably: low SAT, low SAT2 math and financial need. If you need considerable financial aid then note that only a handful of US universities are need blind for internationals. I don’t remember the entire list, but I think it included: Harvard, Amherst, MIT, Princeton and a few others.
These schools are ultra-competitive, so you should definitely look at other options where you might get financial aid.
Unfortunately, there are just so many students applying. There is no guarantee at competitive schools.
