admission rescinded

hi i attend a very competitive hs and am in the ib program, but have had bad grades this semester

A- history
A- philosophy
C-Biology
C- math
B- english
E- Spanish

I should of gotten a c in spanish, but due to family matters at the end of the year i was not able to turn the coursework in on time (even though i had my parents talk to the teacher). IF i write a letter will i be ok (my gpa first semester was around 2.6, now its around 2.4)

dont say anything! I had a friend whose mom was scared and called the admissions office about his admission and they put him on academic probation even before school started. He said that if his mom wouldnt have called they wouldnt have done anything.

Your high school has Es?

E's! That's a new thing for me too haha.

I.. wouldn't be surprised if you received a letter concerned about your grades.

If you got in with a 2.6, you must have something that stands out that UVA wanted, am I not correct?

Did they say anything about the 2.6 first semester? If not, you maybe have a small chance about sliding by. But I'm with Melli...I think you're about to get asked for an explanation. I would start drafting a letter now, just in case.

Are there different standards based on different students? That is, are they looking for relative drops based on what they admitted you with, or is there an "absolute" rescindence threshold. By "absolute" I mean in the sense of "same threshold for everybody in order to send a letter," and not, "absolutely rescinded".

See, all past reassurances about grades seem to have used examples who sounded like in-state students. ("My friend got ___ for grades and there was no trouble.") Are they tougher on OOS students?

unfortunately none of us know the answer to that question galoisien. I know one or two that received a letter concerned about their final grades, but there's no way to quantify what determines that (other than just low grades in general).

Well, I don't think there's a cutoff...

I'm just curious if there's any statistical data.

Given that you attend a competitive school, and you are in the IB Program (Diploma???) I wouldn't be particularly worried. Hopefully they will understand that with IB Exams, graduation, sports, etc (ie. whatever got you in with a 2.6 ;) ) that there was truly too much to do, and your grades suffered. Since you were accepted, you have certainly shown academic promise, and hopefully will continue to show the same level of effort that got you admitted. One bad semester is little in the scheme of 4 years of High School, SATs, and IB exams.

I know that my grades fell this semester, going from a 92% average to a 86% average. Am I worried? No! With the combination of IB Exams, school finals, Track team, Band, and taking another course online, there was way too much to do in a short period of time to possibly keep my grades up. Coming from one of the top high schools in North America, doing the IB diploma program (with near perfect predicted grades), I have shown myself to work hard, and do my best. That is what they are looking for.

Realistically, Dean J. has said that UVA rescinds a handful of admitted students each year. I would assume that these are people that just made the cut, come from a weaker school, took few honors/demanding courses, and caught a very bad case of senioritis. Admissions being rescinded has been referred to as a painful process for both the student and the school, and will be avoided at all costs. If you get asked to explain your grades, do so promptly, with a letter and phone call. Explain your situation, and hopefully everything can be solved.

The thing is, you went from 92% to 86%. That's perfectly respectable and no one would raise an eyebrow at it.

Are you doing the IB Diploma Program? If you get your diploma and submit the results for the actual IB exams, I'm sure you'll be fine unless your scores are dramatically worse.
