Admission Rescinsion

I am in the worst situation right now!! My class took the AP Calculus exam and many people failed the horribly! I, unofortunately, am one of those people. In my district, if you fail the exam you get an automatic "F" no matter what. So now, my final transcript will say that I have an "F". I have been accepted to Cornell and I have a likely letter from Duke. If I am lucky enough to be accepted to harvard, Princeton, or Yale, I am worried that they will rescind my admission when they see my "F". However, I am in block schedule which means that i have 4 quarters of grades. My other grades have been good but my calc grades have been B, C, F(as of now) and an A the last quarter (guaranteed if you improve). If i finish off strong with straight "A"s even in Calculus do you think that this will counter weight my "F" in the third quarter? I will send a letter also explaining how sick I was during the exam and how like half of the people failed the exam. This letter will be from a guidance counselor. So do you think my admission (if i were to get into HYP) (or for Cornell and Duke) will be rescinded?

I do believe that county law says that we can retake the exam to make a "D" however.

this doesn't make any sense, half the people in a class are not going to get an F.

according to me dude u are taking calculus to look good on your transcript or resume...i never favour taking subjects at advanced level if you are not intersted in them...and i think thats what the adcomms will see thru...
but as u say u have been accepted..so if u can get the letter telling them that u were sick they wont rescind admission...and well some adcomms told me that admissions are rescinded only if u lie on the apps..or get like all or 50% F's...so dont worry too much.

If you are intending to concentrate in the arts it probably won't matter very much. If you are intending to concentrate in the sciences it may matter.

County law? Dude, what the heck are you talking about?

His county's education policy on retaking tests in high school, I would guess.

ap exams are offered in a month.

an F could get you withdrawn from a school. some kid got an F in a course and ended up going to UCF instead of Cornell.

but yeah, you take calc and only want a good grade? bad indeed

I think people are being too harsh to apfreak. We all know the game: colleges want to see that you took the hardest courses at your high school. So don't look down on someone for taking courses for reasons other than pure love of the subject. I'm sure a lot of you have done it, if you analyze your motives really honestly.

To respond to your initial question, I don't think that you will have your admission rescinded. Right now, it sounds like your final grade in the course will come to a C, not an F. Colleges don't rescind for one C, assuming your other grades are good. Additionally, if you explained your schools' policy articulately anad without whining, I think they would make an exception for you anyway. Your school has a policy that most other schools don't - essentially, your admission would be being rescinded based on an AP score, which is not the case for the vast majority of students.

apfreak, what do you mean your class took the AP Calculus exam? Do you mean a past year's exam that is serving as a final? I don't understand why the district would have a policy guaranteeing F's to all those that don't pass an arbitrary mid-semester practice exam, but perhaps I am confused...

gosh you're crazy/hypocrital if you're telling him that taking AP Calc was a bad idea b/c he's "not interested"... especially on an ivy league forum - come on, top colleges look for the tough courses! we all know that - get over it!

apfreak - I'm sorry about your exam problem... I assume you mean a quarter/midterm exam...obviously not the actual AP exam b/c we all know that is in May... I think a letter will be just fine if all of your other grades are strong and you have otherwise maintained a strong record.

(though i'm only a senior in HS, but that's what I think...)

I take AP Calc and AP Spanish, yet I am not fond of either class. I do well in both, but I don't have a special interest in either. My intended major is Poly Sci. or a related field in the humanities, so AP Calc isn't really that important to me. However, I took it to challenge myself-my teacher is tough, but she makes sure we learn the material. I really feel like I have gotten a lot out of class, even though I am not particularly fond of Math in general. Obviously, college played into me taking a hard course-load, but I also feel like I am preparing myself for college academics.

So, I don't think there's anything wrong with taking a class to challenge yourself and get a good grade.

Okay...the county gives their own practice AP exam. Also, they will not see a C for the semester...my school does 4 quarters. They will see 4 grades....the F and the A...and the grades from the two quarters making up the first semester.

This sounds absurd. I am having a tough time grasping the fact that this is exactly as your school district functions. If so, they are corrupt. There is no way that they could have a policy like that, and if they did, there is no way they could possibly delegate that many 'F' grades....

ughh...i remember failing exams with the rest of my math class freshman year(believe me, we had the hardest teacher).

why are you on harvard board if you've been accepted to cornell? early decision? or which school?

This is like standardized testing taken to the MAX.

"why are you on harvard board if you've been accepted to cornell? early decision?"

Cornell recently sent out likely letters to notify RD acceptees a few weeks in advance.
