Hi All,
My son was admitted to UW last spring and ultimately turned it down for an out of state school with a higher ranked program in his major. The decision was a tough one and we were still talking about it at midnight on april 30--point being that he loved UW, too and it obviously has a LOT to offer. His stats were very high (4.0/2100 SAT, 32ACT)if that makes a difference here....

In the last few weeks he is really questioning his decision. He says he is determined to finish out the year at his current school but I need some information:

What if he wanted to transfer spring quarter? Would he be considered a transfer student or a freshman? Would he have to apply again and if so, when?

His OOS is 9K/quarter not including books or transportation. Other than saving that money, is there any advantage to him making the switch before the end of the year? Any advantage to finishing the year and waiting until fall to make the switch (if he can get admitted).

Finally, what kind of new student services does UW offer for incoming students who aren't first quarter freshmen.

Oh, and could he even get housing spring quarter?

He would be considered a transfer student, and yes it is possible to get housing. However, it would make more sense to just finish his year at the other school and apply next fall as a transfer, mostly because it’s awkward to transfer into spring quarter. There are a few transfer programs for people who aren’t freshmen to get acquainted with other transfers, such as TRIGs (FIG equivalent for transfers).

Well, he can’t transfer in spring quarter anyway. Admissions for spring transfer is closed now (unless he is a computer science major). So i’d suggest for him to just finish up at his current college and transfer in for fall (the application deadline is next month for fall)

Just pick a quarter and look at the courses you think would be most applicable to your son’s major. From the course descriptions, you can see when certain courses are being offered. Most course descriptions will say “Offered:” in the description followed by an A (Autumn), W (Winter), Sp (Spring), and/or S (Summer). For example, if you go to Winter Quarter 2011>>Biology (BIOL)>>BIOL 180 INTRO BIOLOGY, you would see that the Biology 180 entry level course is offered in the spring.

So check out the sites above and contact an advisor.
