Admissions Chances

Hello,
I am a current high school junior from New Jersey and I am wondering what my chances would be for applying to Bates.
I am planning to apply ED I.
I have a GPA of 3.6
I have taken all honers/accelerated courses, including three AP’s so far (I plan to take 5 next year).
My SAT score is a 1970 after one test (I plan to take it again a few more times)
680 Critical Reading
570 Math
700 Writing
I am a varsity rower, and have been for two years.
I designed, organized, and built a garden composed of plants which were all native to my area to be used my school and local elementary schools for ecological education
I plan to attend a summer environmental science leadership course this summer from a local university (Drexel).
I participate in a soup kitchen staffed by members of my church almost every month.
I served on the leadership committee for my school’s Peer Mentor program, as well as participated in said program for two years.
I was a youth leader for my church’s conformation class.
I have been going on a mission trip to rural Kentucky to repair houses for four years.
I plan to go with my school on a service trip to Honduras to build schools this summer.
I have also participated in my school’s model UN beginning this year.

What do you guys think my chances are, and what can I do to improve them?

I think it is a low reach. Your GPA is a little low. Try and get great grades this year so you can raise your GPA!

Show interest by visiting Bates, interviewing, and meeting the rowing coach. Also, cultivate relationships with your teachers and counselor this term so they’ll know you well and can give meaningful recs in fall.

You must show interest as niceday suggests, especially since the 570 will hurt you–maybe don’t submit SATs. Your GPA is a bit low also but perhaps outstanding ECs and letters of recommendation as well as top notch essay will help. The Varsity crew coach should be contacted if you have the stats to row at Bates. All best wishes for your success.

I want to add a bit about my gpa. I came from a small private school where I was not as prepared as I should’ve been (especially in math) I got a 3.3 my freshman year  which is awful I know…last year I was able to bring that up to a 3.8 and this year I’ve got a 3.9 or a 4.3 with AP weight. I know some schools like improvement over time, will that help at all?

Your GPA is fine. Make your interview and essays great.

I’d suggest not submitting your SATs. Bates is test optional so not submitting won’t hurt your chances. As kissmeimnotirish says, make your interview and essays fabulous and show interest in Bates in any way you can as that’s valued. Good luck to you!

Just got a transcript report today and I’m up to a 3.8!

Congrats on your improving GPA, that’s great! You should also know that some schools (UC, CMU, Stanford, probably others) either do not count freshman year grades, or weight them lower.

Does bates look at freshman grades?

yeah, but if you show improvement that’s what counts.

I was admitted by Bates College. Im a international student, and trust me SAT does not even hurt… I got only 1780 of SAT which 510 in reading, 600 in writing and 670 in math. But I have a high GPA which is 4.0 and I am the valedictorian in the school. My essays are good, and my recommendation letters are EXTREMELY GREAT( my teacher told me b/c I dont have a chance to read it). I think you should register for an interview. I did really well in my interview and that helps. So dont really worry.
