Admissions Decisions - Class of 2022

Ok so I sent OSU Admissions an email regarding why my application is still in Evaluation, and they replied:

“Unfortunately, our university has reached full capacity for admitting students for the 2018 Autumn semester. You are being considered on a space-available basis, meaning that we can evaluate your application as room becomes available to admit more students. Please note that space-available based students should be receiving their decision by June 1. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you.”

So I would say this is pretty much a Waitlist, however the efficiency of OSU’s admissions seems to be very low and unsatisfactory. Until and unless I sent them an email asking about it, they did not give any clear indication as to why a decision was not made by the “End of March” notification date. And so you guys know, I applied Regular Decision on January 19th, which is well before the Feb 1st deadline.

This was the last admissions decision I was waiting on, so I guess this marks the end of my Undergraduate university application process. It’s been a ride, but, Purdue University it is

@therealrp17 I’m sorry to hear how poorly your application was handled. I do agree, if you are wait-listed, you were owed the courtesy of a formal reply indicating that! Admissions needs that feedback.

If OSU is truly where you would like to go, accept the wait-list spot, move forward with Purdue, and if you do ultimately get an offer from OSU, re-evaluate then. Many who do this fall in love with the school they did commit to and never look back. But keeping your options open will help you get closure one way or another too.

Best of luck to you, whatever path you choose!

I called Admissions today and an Admissions Counselor said no one was accepted off waitlist last year? This seems to conflict with info on this chat board. Does anyone know anyone accepted off waitlist last year?

Yeah, my next door neighboor committed to UC and then around May 7th last year she was accepted off the waitlist and switched to OSU. Sounds like the admissions at OSU doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Also if you look up “Common Data Set OSU” you can find the number of people put on the waitlist in years prior and how many were admitted.

looks like a lot of people were accepted off the waitlist last year, but the year before that none were. I checked the OSU common data set.

it sucks that OSU notifies people on the waitlist after the May 1st deadline. this means a lot of people will lose their deposits if they chose to attend OSU if they were previously committed to another school just in case. OSU is awful at communicating and doesn’t take into consideration other schools deposit deadlines.

Can you provide that link? I can’t seem to find the info by just searching osu common data set. Thanks in advance for any help!

@KEB1223 sorry you’re disappointed but that is how waitlists work at all schools, not just OSU. Schools don’t know how many spots they have to offer until the May 1 deadline passes and accepted students have declined their offer.

Thanks very much!!

I came in off the waitlist and although it was scary being notified in early May, I am glad I stil chose OSU. Hopefully, this will be a year for them to pull off the waitlist again. The good news is the communication process gets much better once you are admitted. I heard one year they took the entire waitlist. Hoping this wil be the case for those who want to attend.

Me too! The waitlist is not fun!

They at least should send an e-mail

@Setter4life I agree with the approach, however, doing everything exactly the way you described, my son who had a 32 on the ACT, 93 GPA, AP’s, college classes, leadership and EC’s apparently make the cut for the Buckeye which is shocking. The reason he did not get it is that this year they decided to put more weight on transcript and GPA (which still leaves me scratching my head). Everyone should manage their expectations and hope for the best.

Congratulations to all, I wish you the best of luck!

@H0llyw00d Hopefully you and everyone else here have other excellent options as well… By the way I am not trying to be mean by saying that. We are three weeks away from Commitment day and you just don’t want to hold on into false hope. I probably would have been fine attending one of my other options as well even though OSU was always at the top of my list.

My son just declined his admission and Morrill Scholarship to Ohio St. This should open a door of opportunity for someone. Good luck!

@H0llyw00d Ive been following this thread and I’m trying to find a reason that makes sense as to why your son did not at least get the Nationals Buckeye. Was the 93 or 3.75 gpa unweighted? And was it in the top 25% of his class? And was it with a rigorous course load (at least half honors and 3 to 5 APs? Even if a high school does not provide class rank, the regional admissions officer has a good idea of roughly what percentile a gpa is equivalent to. So if the 93 /3.75 gpa (unweighted) is not in the top 25 percentile range that is likely the reason. Did any of your son’s high school class mates apply to Ohio state and receive the national buckeye? If so how did their stats compare with your son’s (your sons high school guidance department should be able to find out for you). Assuming your son’s stats were top 25% and that others from his high school received the national buckeye I would speak to the chair of your son’s high school guidance department and ask him or her to call the regional admissions officer for the territory where your son’s high school is located and find out the real reason why. Sometimes guidance will get the real scoop whereas parents or students calling will not. And the chair should say your son would attend if given the national buckeye because it’s his first choice. Your chair has a relation with Ohio State and Ohio State wants to maintain good relations with OOS high schools and continue to attract high stat OOS students who bring in more tuition revenue (even with the national buckeye scholarship) than in-state students. So they should be responsive to your chair reaching out on your behalf. Best of luck! And let us know where your son ends up!

@Meant2B To be honest OSU was not very high on my list, mostly because even if I got admission to OSU, the College of Arts and Sciences only accepts 16-18 freshman into my intended major (Industrial Design) every year, and if I don’t get selected I’ll be stuck doing a major I’m not interested in or have to go through the pain of transferring.

Your advice is much appreciated though, and I totally agree with you about keeping options open. I guess I’ll not decline the wait-list offer so that I do get that closure that you mentioned. Either way, I just committed to Purdue today and I’m ecstatic about finally being a college student. Thank You for your wishes
