Here’s a link to the Feb. 24 Head’s Blog, with specific info about the admissions process.

This school is very aggressive at soliciting applications. They sent a lot of invitations through SAT.

Trying to get their denominator # apps up no doubt, so they can perhaps appear more selective?

While I don’t discount the real possibility of the above (^^), I think there are at least 2 explanations that are slightly less nefarious. :)

1) They are trying to raise their profile. The relative lack of discussion here on CC of the non-HADES TSAO schools–most especially Hill and Loomis–indicates there’s a whole sector of applicants who aren’t considering these schools, so they may be trying to reach out to them to demonstrate what they have to offer.

e.g., http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-cafe/1199283-most-popular-boarding-schools-survey-2.html

2) The school highly values ethnic and socio-economic diversity, so using SSAT scores and self-identified URM status to recruit would be a natural, especially since LC has specific FA directives and resources for such kids.

Finally, I don’t think they have to worry too much about “appearing” selective, they ARE selective. Not >20% selective, perhaps, but somewhere between 20-25% is hardly a shoo-in.

I actually find pretty offensive f2000sa’s suggestion that Loomis is “aggressively” soliciting applications. I agree with PelicanDad that this is a school that should be better known . . . and kudos to the school for taking steps to make that happen!

PD, you are probably right. Just came from a college information session, where soliciting increased apps were a sign of a school trying to raise selectivity. Hopefully, it hasn’t come to this with boarding schools.
Loomis is a great school, and a selective one at that!

D got a mailer today from Vanderbilt. I’m not sure where they bought her address, but I thought it was pretty ridiculous to send to a 14 y/o. I want to send an email telling them that I’m trying to keep her OUT of college right now, but they’re welcomed to send something in a few years.

I know… She took an AP exam last year. College Board must be the culprit.

Back in the day our BS mailroom was flooded by college packets soon after the PSATs. Even then I think many of us were horrified to see the wasted paper stock that was dumped into a big box for immediate recycling. I wish schools (colleges especially) would stick to e-solicitations, unless a family directly requests a glossy viewbook.
