Admissions 'Next Steps' Webinar?

Hi y’all :)

Our regional recruiter hosted a webinar for students/parents last week, I couldn’t attend. S did attend but didn’t have much to report back (unfortunately that doesn’t surprise me :(). I would like to view the recording, the recruiter sent me a link but it didn’t work.

Has anyone else attended a similar event recently - if so, any salient points to share? I am thinking dates for Bama Bound, housing selection, Outdoor Action registration and finalizing financial end of things, etc are my biggest questions I would have asked about.

Roll Tide!

Not the webinar, but some helpful links:

Upstate13, CC is better than any webinar you can view online. Hang here and you will be better informed - and more entertained - than any parent who could recite that webinar by heart.

Bamagirls, thanks for the useful links. Thanks to you posting these, I just printed the Required Immunization form.

One more bit of advice I got from the college resource counselor at my son’s HS, try to make hotel reservations for football weekends we plan on attending, especially parent weekend.

Class2012mom you are SO right, if it weren’t for CC S wouldn’t be going to UA in the first place!!!

And thanks everyone, the checklists and the Bama sites are very helpful. I have fallen behind a bit and need to spend time (as does S) making sure to stay ahead of things.

It’s also smart to reserve early for move in. You’ll get a better selection and a much cheaper rate. :)

^^^^'Make sure that he checks his Mybama acct emails regularly. Housing and other important info will be communicated that way. If i remember correctly, there is very little snail mail after a student is enrolled before freshmen year. I remember that the Blout invites and such were regular mail but everthing else was email.

Sometimes kids forget to check. You might want to have him log in and take a look yourself, so you don’t miss anything important.

Txdoula, the football weekends are all pretty full - and ridiculously expensive - even now.

I would suggest making reservations now for move-in weekend if you haven’t already done so. I’d reserve for each weekend, in case your child may do AA/OA/rush. You can always cancel reservations you don’t need. Also reservations for Bama Bound if you don’t plan to stay in the dorms.

Wow, thanks, I don’t even know what the move in dates are, I better get crackin’ :)

Indeed Class 2012! We have reserved Georgia State last November, thinking that might be parent’s weekend. We got our 4th choice of hotels, at a ridiculous price. That said, glad we have one, cancel if we change our minds. I figure parents who wait until this summer will be out of luck.

Re: the other weekends…what is OA?

It’s fun!

[Outdoor Action | Honors College](http://honors.ua.edu/outdoor-action/)

It runs the same week as Alabama Action. It’s for those who enjoy outdoor activities.

Here is last year’s move in schedule to use as a guess when making reservations.

http://movein.ua.edu/check_in/schedule.cfm

A suggestion for making sure an email isn’t missed is to have your student forward their Crimson email to an account that is checked regularly. My daughter had hers forwarded to my account since she didn’t check email regularly while in high school. A bonus, she hasn’t stopped the forward so I still receive the important emails :)

OA is Outdoor Action. An honors program like Alabama Action with projects relating to the environment/outdoors.

Oops, sorry Bamagirls for the double post, moving too slow today.

I know this has been said before, but it can’t be said enough…Alabama Action and Outdoor Action are great programs to particiapte in for incoming honors students.

I truly believe the AA experience gave my son the start he needed at UA in order to be successful academically and socially as a freshman. He still hangs out with friends he made at AA.

One “bad” point is that during regular move in weekend, there were school sponsored activites for parents to participate in and we missed out on that. It was more important for my son to get off to a great start, though, so it is a small price to pay.

So if we are coming from 750 miles away and planning on delivering my son in time for AA or OA, do experienced parents reco hotel reservations in T-town for Friday, Saturday or both?

^^ My son did AA last year and we just about the same distance as you are. We chose the latest Friday afternoon move-in time, arriving in town late afternoon. We had just a little time to make it to the PO to pick up some things we had shipped directly to school (PO was not open on weekends - but I don’t think it’s known yet how things will be handled this coming August). We spent that night and most of the following day unloading, picking up things we had shipped to pick up at Walmart, etc. That’s just us. I spent time ironing and hanging curtains and cleaning the dorm room to my standard of “mom clean” - you may choose not to do any of that. I know there were some parents who unloaded and left campus within a few hours time, although they probably didn’t travel as far.

We stayed until Sunday morning, took S out to late breakfast and left.

I don’t remember for sure but I think none of the dining halls opened until Sunday evening, so if you don’t stay your student will have to walk to get some food (which could be a good thing and force them out and about).

Keep in mind the posted move in schedule is from 2012. It’s a starting place to speculate about move in dates for 2013 and making reservations now. It isn’t set in stone, so I’d err on the side of reserving whatever I thought I might need and then cancel when dates are set.

We arrived mid-day on Friday and spent Friday and Saturday night in town. Seems like AA started around 4pm on Sunday, so we took our son and a roommate (who checked in early for OA) to lunch and then hit the road. It was nice to have plenty of time to get everything done and say our good byes, since we live about 13 hours away.

ProudBamaMama - where in PA do you live? We live near Philly and are planning to drive down for move in. Google Maps is saying it’s around 14 hours. Did you do your drive in one day?? I was thinking that after moving our S in, we would leave late Saturday and stop halfway and then drive the rest of the way home on Sunday.
