Hey! I read in the paper yesterday that there’s a new reality show called The Scholar on ABC that’s coming out this summer. Does anyone know anyone who’s on it? It sounded like it’s a competition for a scholarship but not admission to a school. I wonder how they are going to judge the winner. Write back if you know anything!!!

once again, tv exploiting kids for good entertainment.

A friend of mine is participating in it. I know nothing else about it though.

"once again, tv exploiting kids for bad entertainment."

fixed. :)

I remember getting an e-mail to audition to be on it from ABC and shaking my head.

i actually heard that admission officers created the show. it'd be nice if we actually got to see how colleges make decisions.

I wanted to apply for it, but my parents wouldn't fill out the financial part of the paper work.

I actually think it sounds fun to watch. It'll be interesting to see the different kids and how they go through the process. I'll watch reality shows if I'm actually interested in what they're doing and if they're not total trash. I'm hoping this will be good.

Description:
THE SCHOLAR (new alternative series) The opportunity of a lifetime is about to come true for one of Americas best and brightest high school students in a groundbreaking unscripted series that will send the winner to a top-rated university, all expenses paid. Filmed on location at the University of Southern California, The Scholar will be the first show ever to celebrate higher education as the ultimate American prize. For the chance of a full-ride to the college of their choice, ten qualified high school seniors -- who might not otherwise have an opportunity to pursue a college education -- will compete for a full scholarship and all college related expenses, a prize valued at $250,000. They will have to demonstrate excellence in the areas of academics, leadership, creativity and community service, while facing sudden-death oral exams and defending themselves to an Ivy League scholarship committee. The Scholar is a concept based on an original idea by Jaye Pace, Shannon Meairs and Waxman Williams Entertainment. Steve Martin, Joan Stein, Jon Murray, Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner will serve as executive producers. Series premieres MONDAY, JUNE 6 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET).

Hey, competing for a paid education is a hell of a lot better of a premise for a show than competing to marry some stranger. I'm kinda surprised that this show would be given such a prime slot. I hope it doesn't suck.

I remember some of the toughest scholarship interviews I've had to go through. You couldn't pay me enough to get me to do them on national television.

Then again, I'm going into politics, so I guess that's in my future anyway.

I don't know what to think... I'm gonna watch it though , so I guess the network wins. Maybe that's only because I just went through the admssions process.

Also, is the university USC that they are competing to attend?

the article says "to the college of their choice." i think it's just filmed at USC...but i know one of the people who thought of the concept is on the adcom at columbia.
