last year I applied to exeter and got rejected. So this year I am going to reapply and also apply to choate .I a considering peddie but i can not find a huge amount of information about them.can someone please help me ? I a appeal to strong sciences ,sports, and what are the ssat's scores? If i can not get more info i am just gonig to apply to st.mark's.

If you're applying to Exeter, a safe score, as kids on CC say, is around a 95. But there have been kids with some scores in the high 90s and low 80s who get into Exeter. I know Exeter values the math SSAT higher than any of the others, so it's good to bring that one up.

What were your SSATs last year?

antonuccia, you may want to start with Peddie's web site. Don't go by hearsay, do your own research. Peddie has made a commitment to the sciences with their new science center. They truly needed it because their previous science center was in need of replacement. I cannot answer what there average SSAT scores are, they seem to play it close to the vest with these numbers. As for sports, they are very competitive in many sports. Depending on the sports you play may make a difference. They do not offer ice hockey. They do have a strong swim program as does M'burg. They must have a descent basketball team, when we went to revisit day they had some giants roaming around campus that were basketball recruits as per a student.

With a huge endowment, we felt the campus needed some work. What didn't need work was their Gym.

St. Mark's..........We recently visited and my D interviewed. I have to say I was more impressed with school after visiting than I was before. They have a nice mixture of old and new. There student center was like being in a room at home where you might put the kids in to do whatever they pleased. They have a strong Math department with an institute that appears to attract a number of math types. There classics program is cool, if you take three years of latin and two years of Greek you qualify a special diploma. On the down side, the freshman dorms are a bit of a walk.
SMS, is part of the ISL, a sport league without PG's. SMS as I understand is quite competitive in basketball and ice hockey. If you're into Lacrosse check Middlesex out who also is part of the isl.

A few schools don't like to publish their ssat and sat numbers. I think Peddie is one of these. When I see a school like this, I assume it is because they have a variety of students with a range of scores -- some very high and some not so high. They don't want to discourage people at either end. These are assumptions on my part and may not be the truth. You might want to call Peddie Admissions to ask what their range is.

Which sports do you want to play at boarding school? Did you ever consider Loomis? I hear they have a very strong science program.

i got into all exeter, andover ,SPS, choate, hotchkiss and lawrenceville with 85%.....yet i got rejected by kent and taft oh..and concord which are considerably a notch lower academically....when schools look at people..it's SSAT is only a part of it..they look at how you would fit..if you fit well..they wont hesistate to take a lower scorer..if you dont...they wont even think for another minute before they reject you even if u might hav scored 99%

Now that you mention Taft, any reason why they are not included in the "boarding school review"? I know in the past L'ville was not included. They are now but still no Taft. do schools have to pay to be included? can they just say no

u mean boardingschoolreview.com?? that might be becoz they didnt provide sufficient info??maybe lacking mean SAT??? lacking range of SSATs...maybe they didnt make any official statistics public

yes that's what I meant. there are any number of schools that don't provide such data that are still in boardigschoolreview. Peddie does not give ssat or sat. In fact they say that the ssat is not required for Peddie on this site. I know for a fact this is incorrect. Must be a mistake.

So antonucci, are you gaining some insight? You might as well apply to both peddie and sms. One thing for sure, if you are set on bs, broaden your numbers.

Taft is not in the list of schools at boardingschoolreview.com, but it does pop up if you use the site's "search" function. There are even a couple of student reviews. Here it is:

I know that Lawrenceville used to be missing from boardingschoolreview.com because they didn't grant the site permission to show it's information. Apparently it is up now, although the information seems to be a couple years out of date.

that site is generally unreliable and innacurate. Petersons.com is much better.

wow, I found petersons not to be acurate either.

TABS (The Association of Boarding Schools) should be the source, but it isn't www.schools.com . They just don't provide very much useful information. Here is their mission:

The Association of Boarding Schools leads a national and international effort to promote awareness and understanding of boarding schools, expand the applicant pool for our membership, and offer support and direction for residential life programs. Our goals are to provide information about member schools to the general public, and to engender favorable publicity for the boarding option. We seek to support our schools in marketing, recruitment and enrollment management endeavors and identify the value-added of teaching and learning in a residential setting.

They must have developed their directory years ago for hardcopy distribution. They have yet to adapt to the Internet.

Green's Guide to Boarding Schools is quite accurate, though a book. I think it contains information on every boarding school in the country. Not positive, though.

greene's guides are very old publications. Have they updated their info. Caution, the main greene is on the board of trustess at choate

I found it to be quite unbiased, actually. I have the new version, and though it didn't give any real details about the school, it satisfies all of the numbers and basic facts.

Thanks pretty I actually have read many of their books and have found them to be quite helpful. I guess I just haven't come across the prep school publication. Thanks!

This is "The Greenes' Guide to Boarding Schools" published by Peterson's, and it includes Peterson's Boarding School Profiles. I just assumed that it was the same info in their larger guide for independent schools but just includes boarding schools. The format looks similar to the hardcopy independent school guide. I never checked the numbers to see if they were updated. The first edition of the boarding school guide is 2006.

Ref. #14 -- Actually, I found a very slight bias. The guide includes case studies of 14 clients of the Greene's -- what the parents were looking for and what the applicant was looking for. Two of the 14 appicants ended up going to Choate; none of the other schools were featured twice. A minor point, but still there. Choate is mentioned in the copy several times too. It is a helpful guide, and I wish had it last year.

That's interesting, Burb Parent. I didn't read it very closely; I mostly used it to look up facts. However, I'll keep that in mind.

prettyckitty/burbparent do you have the particulars on the greenes guide? I would like to order a copy. Thanks
