Hey I'm a transfer student and just got admitted yesterday. I've never visited the UCSD campus before, and I am just so damn far away. I'm about 8 hours away. So UCSD is holding their Admit Day on May 12th. Here's what I'm planning to do.

Friday (May 11th)

sleep from 1pm-10pm
drive to San Diego at 11pm
arrive in SD at 7am

attend Admit Day til 3pm
drive back to Bay Area at 3pm
arrive back home at 11pm

So basically it's drive 8 hrs to SD, attend Admit Day, then drive 8 hrs straight back home, so about 16 hrs drive round trip. Is Admit Day worth it for all this? Or does this sound a little crazy?

for me, if i'm going...i'm going with my parents friday afternoon to stay at relatives in the OC and then leaving for SD at around 6ish am

i don't even know if its worth it to go to admit day for me because i just booked some plane tickets to go to sun god the weekend following admit day.

it depends on you if you are able to commute back and forth without losing any ability on finals. it IS really important that you visit what colleges you plan on attending since you would get the feel for the campus. it really makes a difference.

what if you go to orientation later and found out that you hated the school? then you screwed yourself. i highly recommend that you visit all colleges you plan on attending. if you're on tight schedule and know that you can handle it, then go for it. it is always best that you have a buddy with you.

Don't do it. With the schedule you indicated it's not worth it because there's too great a chance you might fall asleep at the wheel and get in an accident. It's also not a good start to a finals week (i.e. dead tired). You'll also be too tired to get that much out of the admit day.

Some alternatives -

Friday - Drive to UCSD at 1PM and stay in motel the night.

Saturday - Attend admit day early and preferably stay the night again. Use the extra time after 3pm to explore the area around UCSD to get a better feel of the area.
-- Walk to the cliffs and Black's beach across from Muir (maybe it's part of admit day - don't remember).
-- Go to La Jolla Shores beach and La Jolla Cove to check those areas out.
-- Drive around the UTC area where a lot of apartments/condos are - around Regents and Nobel to get an idea of where you might end up living.
-- Check out other areas that might fit with your interests.

Drive back early Sunday morning.

Option - forego the checking out of the area and second night stay and head back immediately after the admit day - as long as you're awake enough to drive for 8 hours.

*** Other alternative
* Skip admit day and come visit when you have more time to do it reasonably.

If you're going to Admit Day to see if you actually want to go to the school, it would be more beneficial to you to visit the campus on a normal school day and sit in on a class or two. You'll learn a lot more about the school that way.

Hey thanks for the info ucsducladad. If I was set on going to UCSD, I wouldn't even go to this event. The only reason why I'm going is to check out the campus and surrounding area for the 1st time to see if it's where I want to be or not. My SIR is due on June 1st, and I'm still deciding between UC Davis and UCSD. I want to check out the UCSD campus first before I make my decision.

Scoping out the nearby apartment area is a great idea since I plan to look for an apt if I end up going there. I have relatives down there also. I may just stay overnight with them if I'm feeling too tired to head back after the event.

Hmmmmm, that's not a bad idea. I don't have any school anymore starting the last week in May. Checking out the campus on an actual school day does sound more appealing than on a weekend where it's all visitors. I would get a better feel of campus life if I did that.

When does spring quarter at UCSD end this year?
