ydnar, yes my D was in Roble! She had a great visit. It certainly sealed her decision to attend Stanford. It’s exciting now to be planning a repeat visit in September!

Stanford probably has a nice advantage over the Ivies in that it’s on the quarter system. Admit weekend is in late April, but that is still relatively early in Stanford’s spring quarter (which goes into early June), so the students may be less stressed by impending final exams and papers.

The Ivies in contrast have to host all the pre-frosh in mid-April, just a few weeks before the end of their spring semester. Lots more deadlines and such, for the hosts and rest of student body.

I was in Roble too (and thus had numb feet at midnight too ;)!! And yes I agree with all that Admit Weekend was truly spectacular!!!

Clowiebear - we are from OC also - my D hasn’t been on CC - I pass on the info!

nyudad, with respect, I don’t think there’s much to your theory. At Stanford many of us had midterms and papers converging right around Admit Weekend, but we still put in the time and energy to be sure that prospective freshmen had a fantastic experience. The quarter system may favor Stanford in other ways–e.g., we get to take a wider variety of classes and the fast pace of classes keeps everyone on their toes–but that’s not what gives us the advantage during our Admit Weekend. We have a unique environment here and a high level of satisfaction that is obvious to visiting students.

to echo zenkoan - my D and the friend she traveled with from her school were well aware of the exams and class commitments that their ro ho’s (did I get that right?) had. They kept in contact by phone and made arrangements to connect when they were not in the dorm. It was clear that all had a lot going on in addition to Admit Weekend. But the ro ho’s all seemed to leave an overwhelming impression that they cared, were interested, and wanted them all to commit to Stanford. It was extraordinarily welcoming, to my understanding.

Yeah my RoHo’s roommate actually came in at six IN THE MORNING after writing a paper all night. Stanford students definitely did not want for stress during the weekend. And yet, they were so overwhelmingly friendly and nice and welcoming. At other admit weekends I would be slightly ashamed to wear my lanyard revealing me as a pre-freshman, but at Stanford I was proud to show I was a ProFro–they loved us!!! :D
