Admitted ED!!

They have an RIT loop that they can go into and sign up for and start meeting other new students. My son has been on there and loves it…making friends already

My son was admitted ED to the Game Design program in December…no financial package yet

Congratulations, ayraton and son!

I think we now have 4 sons/2 daughters accepted ED on the thread.

We spent some time looking at the housing brochure over the weekend. We obsessively devoured all of the details of each building and wrote the details out on an enlarged version of the map. I think D decided on a 1st and 2nd choice building. DH thought we were getting a little ahead of ourselves, but I’m kind of a planner (understatement) and just like to have all the details ironed out in advance. :)

I think my son wanted to go into the special interest housing. We inquired about it but they said that there is an application process. He’s just glad he got in. They have an accepted student reception there on April 5th or April 12th so I booked the date and then booked the hotel room because I am sure they will fill up quickly.

My daughter’s first choice is RIT, so there’s another girl!

Glutenmom - Cool. Has she been admitted ED or waiting for RD? What’s her major?

She applied regular decision - art major (but she fluctuates between that and psychology). I’m not worried that she won’t be accepted, she’s an excellent student. She desperately wants to be in the ‘art house’ special interest housing… so that might be the harder bit in all of this. I think there’s a limited number of spaces and the upper level art house kids vote for the freshmen they want to come in. They have off-floor art house members, but I don’t think the experience would be the same. Of course we won’t find out about that until after we send in deposit and commit and all of that. So I guess we’ll just have to cross our fingers. Hoping for some decent merit aid too. We’ll see.

Questions to those accepted into the Game Design Program:

 1. What experiences with game programming have your DS had? Any summer programs you can recommend?
 2. If you don’t mind sharing, what stats did they have - GPA, SAT/ACT score range, ECs?
 3. What factors made your students choose RIT over other gaming/comp sci programs?

DS, a junior, is interested in the program - trying to see if RIT is in his reach.

Thanks…

student4ever, my S is a soph in Game Design. He had a few programming classes in HS, but nothing specific to gaming. He did a summer program at CMU in game design which he loved (it is pricy though). I think they worked with existing software. I don’t think previous game programming is necessary at all. He had a 31 ACT and 4.0 weighted GPA (prob about 3.6 UW). Very few EC’s. Has a presidential scholarship, is in the honors program. RIT was always his first choice, although I made him apply to Drexel as a backup and RPI also for another option.

Thanks, mamabear for the detailed response. Your DS sounds like an excellent student. I’m thinking that many game programming students are looking at the same colleges - DS’14 is also considering Drexel and RPI. Unfortunately, my S does not have as competitive GPA and he doesn’t take the ACT until June so we won’t know for a while if he is in range. Based on a previous recommendation for CMU’s summer program, I did check it out and it is quite pricey.

I’m assuming your S is enjoying RIT! Has he had any coop experience while he’s been there?

Anyone else with info to share re: post #28?

No co-op experience yet, and he is going abroad for 6 weeks this summer through RIT, so he won’t be co-oping this summer either.

DS was accepted early decision in Game Design in December and the following is his story:

An intro C++ programming class this year - not related to gaming
A 6-session intro to digital animation short course at local center
3.7 GPA
33 ACT
Presidential Scholarship - no honors program decision/notification yet
ECs included lots of volunteering and leadership, no sports
Applied also to RPI, WPI and Drexel (accepted at WPI, no decision yet at other two)

RIT was always his first choice after we had visited all the schools mentioned above. RIT really “clicked” with him and he knew it was the place for him within the first hour we were there.

I would highly recommend your DS to take the ACT as many times as possible and try to enhance the ECs with as much volunteer work, leadership stuff as you can.

My daughter is in her second year of the game design major. She had high sats but a hard time in high school … She transferred out of a prestigious school because the pressure was too great and her grades started to fail… She did much better at an alternative school that had only about 40 kids in her graduating class… She had no game design backround but a computer teacher who really believed in her… I thought she was going to pursue Japanese or Japanese history and Culture so Game Design was a little bit of a surprise though she had talked about it when she was 8 years old! She did take a class with ID tech when she was 10 and had a deep love of anime and drawing. She’s quirky and eclectic.

School has been hard and I don’t think she was prepared for the intense programming and physics required. That said, she’s sticking with it and working hard.

My daughter is also a sophomore in the same major – am curious to know more about the summer program…

Interesting you mentioned your daughter was interested in Japanese. My son is taking Japanese language classes and is going to Japan.

So tell me more about the six week summer program?

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Thank you all for the great feedback! I will forward the info to DS.

Mamabear - will your S be in an immersion language program in Japan or will he be taking other courses as well?

Did any of your students attend RIT’s 2-day summer program “College and Careers” for students entering senior year in high school? How was it?

What is the url for checking your application status?

I usually go to the main page, click on “admissions” then “freshman” in the pull down menu. Then there’s a “Login to myRIT” link mid-page.
