Admitted, Have some Questions

Hi, Ive just been admitted to UIUC for Kinesiology. I have a few questions before decided where to go.

Just for those curious, my stats
Best SAT Composite 2100
SAT2 Math 2: 740
SAT2 Bio: 750

Weighted GPA: 4

EC's: Baseball 4 yrs

I dont really want to do to into a whole lot of detail. Typing #'s on an EEEPC is a bit annoying.

I have a few questions about campus life. I visited, but cant remember everything ;)

Dorms:
Im going to college to learn....... and to have fun.
I know I need to focus on school work and ect, but I also want to have fun. Ive heard that 6Pack is the best residence hall for social life.
But there are many dorms in 6Pack. Which one is the best in your opinion for parties and meeting interesting people?
Size of dorm rooms?
Coed?
Im not picky about little things like air conditioning. I can clean my own room.

Gyms/Weightroom
Weightlifting is a big part if my life. I love it.
How are the gyms? Again, Im not picky, but I hate wimpy gyms without power racks and olympic platforms and hardcore loud music. Oh and Chalk.
The only things I need are:
Multiple Power Racks
Multiple Olympic Platforms
Chalk
Bumper Plates
Loud Obnoxious music would be a plus :)
I dont give a hoot about treadmills, machines, and stationary bikes

Due to the great sports tradition, I expect a good gym. This is a very, very important factor.

Food:
As long as its edible. Not to many fried stuff. Other wise I dont care. Whats your take on food at UIUC?

Cars:
Whats the deal with Freshman and Cars? Its a huge school and I want to be able to visit Chicago and drive around. Parking? Gas?

Cost of Living and Jobs:
How much is rent if I decide to rent a place my 2nd or 3rd year?
Is it hard to find a job? What kind of jobs are there? I want to borrow as little money as possible from my parents.

dude chill out. ur never gona find a school that fits all ur needs.

I’m really only asking a few basic questions. Please don’t post if you aren’t going to be helpful.

Googled some info about the sports and gyms, and UIUC’s got a gorgeous gym. Scratch that off my list.

Why can’t I edit my first post?

You do realize that to “visit Chicago” you will need to drive 6 hours total?

Tmac18: 6hrs? round trip?

Yes Tony. It’s about a 2.5 hour trip to Chicago, and the equivalent back. Most people coming into the city from Urbana, stay overnight to get the most out of the trip. Parking is expensive downtown, so I’d get a room a bit outside the downtown area, and use public transportation to get around.

Or you can simply take the train from Urbana to Union Station in Chicago then walk around. It’s just steps to the Sears (err Willis) tower, and a few short blocks to the heart of downtown. Round trip ranges anywhere from 36-70 dollars depending on the train-times you decide to use.

to reply to your question…choose a dorm in the 6 pack that is not a learning comunity and you will be fine. Forbes is one example. As far as a gym, did you tour the ARC when you visited UIUC? It is right across the street from the 6 pack. It is an unbelievable facility that was just re-done last year. You can’t ask for more. Cars are allowed but you will have to park it inconveniently probably at Assembly Hall. If you need it just to go up and back to Chicago it can work but you won’t need it to drive around campus. There is a great bus system that picks you up right outside the 6pack if you don’t feel like walking.

Wow, I wasn’t anticipating 6 hrs, I though more around 4. Thanks for the info Balthezar. Im not planning to go to Chicago very often, just every once in a while, so buses are fine.

Thanks Chris! We went into the Arc, but we didn’t go further than right in the doors.
So Forbes is not a “learning” community. Any other examples?

Hows the social life outside of being Greek?

Just read the info on the dorms in the 6 pack it tells you what dorms are living/learning and what are “regular” dorms. Social life outside of Greek life is about the same. You will find your group of friends and find what you like. There is so much to do from sporting events to the bars…you just have to learn to balance your study time with your party time. There is plenty of fun going on there but it is also a pretty serious place for academics…a good mix.
