<p>I was just admitted ED to Barnard (woo!) and in the letter there’s something about “admitted student programs throughout the month of april”. For financial reasons, my mom wants to know whether they would be a necessary thing to attend – plane fare, hotels, etc. are quite a burden. I’ve already visited the campus twice and I know a LOT about the school, so getting more information in general is not a huge need.</p>
<p>Can any Barnard parents clue me in on exactly what these programs consist of?</p>

<p>It is not necessary to attend the April events --they are for campus tours & info sessions, including an overnight, probably more important for RD students who are trying to make a choice than for admitted students. Nothing essential happens there. </p>
<p>At the end of May and during June, there are advising sessions that are held in New York and also in various parts of the country -- for example, there were sessions in San Francisco & Los Angeles. You get a lot of help with making fall course selections there, so I'd definitely recommend attending one if at all possible -- but even that is not required.</p>
<p>So basically, if finances are an issue, you can save your money -- no need to spend it it on unnecessary travel expenses.</p>

<p>I went to the admitted students program last year, and I really didn't get much out of it. The first day basically consists of some panel discussions, tours, and information sessions, and a small activities fair. The cool part about the first day is that you get to go out for dessert (paid by Barnard). The next day has some more tours and you can sit in on a couple of classes. While it's nice to be able to go to campus for the two days, it is definitely not necessary. I felt like the program was more geared towards RD students who were deciding between Barnard and other colleges. </p>
<p>I'm glad to see your post, Stephanie -- my daughter reported last year that she was bored at the one-day event she went to in April. It was an odd phone call, since she called to simultaneously tell me that she had found it boring and left early, and to request that I send in the deposit to Barnard. But it may be that once your mind is made up, there isn't all that much appeal in listening to presentations or Q&A sessions that are geared to winning you over.</p>
<p>My daughter went to the admitted student's weekend fully knowing that she did want to go there, but really it was not absolutely necessary. I might also add that since there were no advising sessions held near us, she did not attend that either. She got some help with picking classes over the phone and then refined her schedule during "shopping" period, as she has every semester since. There always seems to be something that comes up, 'specially since she has dance classes and rehearsals thrown into the mix. Best to all you admitted ladies!!!</p>
<p>DD and DW went to the admitted students' weekend. Both loved it. DD left her stuff with her mom and took off with two other admitted students and a current student as a guide for a day of shopping and touring by subway. Mom got to hear all of the lectures on why you should go to Barnard. As Calmom points out "If your mind's made up......."
DD didn't get to go to the local planning session in LA because of something at her school. She was able to pick her classes based on the guide that Barnard sent and was happy. I found it difficult to put together from just the guide, but then I'm not the one who has to pick the classes.</p>

Aaah, but you see, my DD was already in NY, staying in Greenwich village, hanging out with her good friends from NYU.... which meant that she had to leave all of that fun stuff in order to go way uptown by subway to listen to reasons that she should attend Barnard. The plane tickets had actually been purchased to allow for a visit to NYU's University Day the previous Sunday, and she was staying the full week in NY, as it coincided with her high school spring break.</p>
<p>The year my daughter went it was around the first weekend in April, I believe. I remember it was our Spring break and we left for NY on the Friday after all decisions were up which is, of course, the end of March. I want to think the admitted students events were Sun-Mon or Tuesday, but we attended a dance performance on Saturday evening and then did some admitted students things on Monday (attending classes, tours, meetings with Financial Aid office, etc). She did not stay with a student as we were in the City with friends.</p>

You may have better luck looking at national data on CollegeBoard ([College</a> Search - Barnard College - SAT®, AP®, CLEP®](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)) or, if your school has a Naviance subscription, that will be more relevant to you.</p>
<p>you can also go to Barnard’s website and do a search for the common data set. you will then find the most recent info about average GPA, test scores, geographic region, etc. </p>
<p>the most recent year is 08-09. It’s a PDF file and begins with some financial info. Scroll down to page 2 and you will begin to see the stats for that year’s incoming class.</p>
