Admitted Students: Q's about Orientation & Advising

@longhorns061012 Hello! This may seem as a dumb question, nevertheless I will still ask for my satisfaction!

I submitted the $50 deposit for housing in Sept and my compatible roommate submitted his in early Dec (both for San Jac). Do you believe it will be a problem to a acquire a place at San Jac (for both of us)? thanks!

“And on a non-academic note, what exactly goes on from 12-2am during orientation?”
I’d like to know this as well.
Also, when do you recommend we complete the online portion of the ALEKS assessment by?

@accepted0018 man it’s hard to say, but December seems a bit late for the 2 most popular dorms, San Jac & Duren. Everything else would probably still be available.

@nofate between 12-2am I believe they have added a “wing meeting” where your orientation advisor holds a session. Honestly i’m pretty sure this has been helping keep freshmen at the dorms at night instead of wandering into West Campus to find frat parties, but they can obviously do so after 2am

@longhorns061012 so even if i did mine in September he might not be guaranteed a spot with me?

I have a few questions regarding classes and credit:

Is there a foreign language requirement for McCombs? I have 3 years of Spanish in high school, so will that cover it or will I have to take it again?

Also, I am aware that the math placement test is for anyone taking a math course in the upcoming year. As a finance major I fully expect to take calculus and/or statistics, but I have no idea when, so how do I know if I have to take the placement test or not? I can’t just wait until orientation either because of the online prep/test prerequisite. How do I figure out if I will be taking a math course/need to take the placement test or not?

When I go to the “claim credit” section of UT Direct, it says I am eligible to claim credit for my SAT II Math I test. What class does this credit go towards? And do we claim credit now or should we wait until we schedule classes during orientation?

Sorry for all the concerns, just super confused by everything! I don’t want to mess it up

@accepted0018 if you submitted yours earlier then that is what UT will use. They will look at your application since it came first and see that you have a preferred roommate, then pull that student to place them with you.

So for PGE, I see that there are three FIG groups. Are these randomly assigned or does S have to select?

@chefmomm I think the student gets to select their FIG.

@chefmomm I would assume they’re assigned actually, since all 3 have the exact same classes. If for whatever reason your times conflict with something else you need to take, they’d probably be happy to put you in one of the other 2.

@hnef27 McCombs itself does not require foreign language, as long as you don’t have high school “deficiencies”, which are typically those with no high school language.

International Business however, will require extensive foreign language and a study abroad experience, so it depends on if you stick with Finance. That doesn’t specially require foreign language. It does require Calc I and II in the first year, because they will be pre-reqs for your upper division Stats courses and other stuff. So you can plan to take the Aleks and Calc in Fall. (unless you have AP credit). If you don’t receive information about signing up for the placement test, you are probably auto-signed up during the McCombs time. If you have real concerns about it though, you can call New Student Services or the McCombs BBA advisors to make sure.

And there’s no reason to claim SAT II Math. It gives you pre-cal credit only, and you don’t need that for your degree. Only AP can give credit for some portion of the Calc sequence. Plus you always want to wait until Orientation before claiming any credit!

I visited UT yesterday! For all you ChemE hopefuls, I was told there were no ChemE-specific FIGs last year because the department didn’t want to host any (darn it UT ChemE department). As of now, there’s no saying if they will host any for the UT19 freshmen. The closest FIGs to ChemE are “Rockin Pipettes” and the general STEM FIGs.

An freshman orientation question. The 2015 orientation is out at the following link:
https://utexas.app.box.com/s/afnwq9i2e45dz4ullwza6dqhjqkjjbvg
My S is taking a megabus to the orientation and it is scheduled to arrive at 9:30am on the first day of orientation (Monday). And the bus leave Austin at 2:55 pm at the last day.

I am concerned that he cannot catch the bus since the last day is for class registration from 2 to 3 pm.

Any idea how the class registration usually go? Is 1 hour enough ?

Yeah you can register in like 15 minutes, just depends how complicated your schedule is. The best bet is having everything ready to go, be checked out of the room, everything. You’ll probably have to go straight from registration to the bus. You’ll probably use add/drops anyway to change your schedule, because registration definitely can be hectic

Although you will miss check-in, so you should contact New student services to arrange late check-in

For computer science, I’m required to obtain:
-Two semesters in a single language or attainment of second-semester proficiency in one language.
-First semester-level proficiency in a foreign language and a three-hour course in the culture of the same language area.

If I have prior knowledge of Chinese and want to take the placement test, I would need an upgraded UT EID. The Chinese site for UT states that the test is given “just before the first summer session, just before the fall semester, mid-semester fall, just before the spring semester, and mid-semester spring.”

Would it matter if I’m an incoming freshman and decided to upgrade my EID before the summer orientation?

If I obtain a good enough score to be eligible for credit in CHI 506, 507, would I fulfill my language requirement (even though the course description for CHI 506 states that it is “not open to students who understand or speak Mandarin Chinese.”)?

@yangster97, I would love to know the answer of your questions too. Maybe you can send them an email. Their response is quite fast. FYI, I sent an email to ask when the first available Chinese placement will be available for incoming 2015 freshman. This is the response:

We typically administer the Chinese placement test the first day of the fall semester. The exact time hasn’t yet been set. That schedule will be posted on our website (http://ctl.utexas.edu/testing > Monthly Test Schedule and Registration) sometime in July. More information about the test can be found on our website, specifically here: http://ctl.utexas.edu/studenttesting/ut-austin-exam-chinese.

Yep CHI 506+507 would fulfill that requirement. When you upgrade your eid at Orientation, you should then have July-August to register for the test. That’s plenty time and honestly there’s no rush to take the test. Unless you’re concerned with it being fresh on your mind, you might not want to worry about it. The first few days are a real blur and you can always take it another semester (they offer it every semester).

I had to sign up for the latest orientation date in July, so does that mean I might not get the classes I want? For example, I’m not an honors student but I really wanted to sign up for Bio 315H (an honors class); does late orientation deter me from this? I also really wanted to be able to choose my professors and whatnot… Am I going to be stuck with bad professors or 8am classes for my intro courses like chem 301 and bio 315H?

@Longhorns061012 For a Business/Science and Technology Management or MIS, what do you think the schedule will look like? Has the following AP credits/expected AP credits:

AP language and composition
APUSH
AP Spanish Language

Expected this year:

AP calc AB
AP psych
AP Gov
AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
AP Lit

Planning on taking Calc II in summer school

@supercoolturtles - They open up additional class seats during each orientation, so you should have the same accessibility to classes no matter which session you attend.
