Questions about freshmen orientation

Is it mandatory? Does it give you a “first come first serve” pick of your classes? Would you recommend an early June session or late July session and why?

I need to work this summer and don’t know if I can take off.

Thanks.

Get the earliest orientation possible.
It’s mandatory because only your advisor can remove the bar for you to register.
Yes, it is first come first serve. When registration opens up on the last day, you will see firsthand the horror that is class registration. Classes will close even during the first orientation because they need to save spots for the other orientations.
Get the earliest orientation possible. I don’t know if you are still able to do this, but back then people who were not able to get a spot in a class could try again when registration opens during the remaining orientations.

Thank you.

So if I went to a June session, would I just have to speculate what my AP scores will be this year? I am taking 5 classes and don’t want to register for one if I am alreadry receiving credit in it.

If you think you’ll receive credit in it, don’t take it right away; however, you could add/drop or switch out if you do register and then find out that you don’t need to take it.

Every time you are able to register (they will give you dates of when registration will be open to you), you will be able to add or drop any class.
I would suggest creating a schedule of the classes you know you will need first, and if there are open spaces in your schedule, add the class you think you will have credit for since you will be able to remove it later.
Usually people put these classes at the beginning or the end of their daily schedule, otherwise if they find out they don’t have to take it, it leaves a big spot in the middle of the classes. (Some people don’t care about breaks in between classes, some try to reconfigure their entire schedule from scratch)

It depends on the classes but yeah you have to pretty much guess what score you’re getting. If it’s a general course it’s not that big of a deal, just don’t sign up for it. If you’re trying to figure out which math or science course you should take based on AP, your advisors will help you figure it out. So if you sign up for one Calculus, you can just switch to another during add/drop, if you need to. If it’s like Rhetoric or History, just don’t sign up for those unless you know you bombed.

@CoolmanIam When my older son signed up for the earliest registration he was not allowed to sign up for the math class that skipped Calculus 1 and 2. He could only sign up to skip Calculus 1. AP scores came out later and he got a 5, so he could have skipped the second Math course in the sequence. However, all classes were full and none opened up the entire summer and during add drop period for the higher level Math class. So he could not claim all AP credit for a 5 on Calculus BC.

Maybe others had a difference experience with upper level core classes.
