Benefits of earlier orientation?

What are the advantages of an earlier orientation date? I’ve heard from some places that classes fill up quickly so before is better, but some also say that each orientation session gets the same amount of classes set aside for them so we can still get the classes/professors we want with ease.

Can we still claim credit for AP courses that come out in July at a later time if we go to orientation in June?

Any input on this is appreciated!

Another question- has anyone heard how difficult the math placement exam will be that we have to take at orientation? Is this something that most people spend time studying for?

I have a current UT student so let me have a go at these questions. Orientation - yes, they open more blocks of classes for each orientation session. AP - you can claim them at any time after you meet with your advisor during orientation. Credit shows up after classes start. Math placement exam - CNS has one specific to that college. Cockrell uses a different one. It is dependent on your major. My student did a math review over the summer online that was provided by CNS, and then she took the placement test at orientation and did fine. She also had to do a chemistry review over the summer that she found very helpful.

It is true that they set aside seats for classes for each orientation so, even if you are not in the first orientation it does not mean all of the classes are filled. There are many other things that can influence your registration- for example- your major/are you in honors, part of a FIG. It seems like there is always some give and take when it comes to registering for classes- whatever session you are in.

Yes, you can claim credit for AP- at any time while you are at UT. It is better if you wait to meet with your advisor to review your degree plan and determine which credits to claim.
