My daughter is very happy to be admitted and received a $16,000 alumni scholarship. Denison is her number one choice but she may not end up there because other very similar colleges are giving her scholarships that bring tuition closer to $30,000 per year. Does anyone know if Denison is open to discussions regarding additional merit aid/awards?

marmelan – do you mean that her scholarship elsewhere brings tuition closer to $30,000 a year, as you wrote, or are you referring to the total cost of attendance? Since Denison’s tuition for next year is $41,380, the scholarship would bring tuition cost to about $25,000. …

Sorry for not being clear, the $16,000 brings her total cost to attend Denison to a little over $36,000. Her awards at other schools bring the total cost (tuition, room and board) to closer to $30,000. This is based on Denison’s figure of tuition, room, board and fees totaling $52,000 for 2012/2013.

I don’t know if Denison does negotiate but I would place the offers in front of them, particularly if they are peer schools. The worst thing that can happen is they say no.

I applied as a joke/experiment. My diversity supplement was:

“For one I am African American and well it doesn’t get much better than having an educated black person infiltrating a college campus. I am familiar with being in institutions that lack a substantial amount of minorities and this helps me obtain a wider view of the world to enhance my experience. I epitomize diversity! Envision me as that one black student that you always see plastered all over college brochures because I exhibit qualities that make for a beautiful, variegated college campus.”

Wasn’t expecting to be accepted nor receive a 20,000 scholarship. That was interesting…

D got her acceptance letter in the mail today and was awarded a Paschal Carter Scholarship. She’s very excited!

Son admitted, $16,000 scholarship…so grateful but I think there will also be need based aid ? Does that notification come at another time?

Daughter in, with Founder’s Scholarship! I believe I’ve read that financial aid is under separate cover. We are looking forward to seeing that too.

My S received a large envelope from Denison today, but it doesn’t seem all that thick and there’s nothing on the outside to indicate the decision. Is this what other accepted students received?

S won’t be home for hours and I’m dying to know…

Yes, D’s came in a large plain envelope with no obvious signs of acceptance and very thin (only about 5 pages in it). Good luck!

No, they always send large, fat envelopes to those declined admission. It’s an odd, cruel joke they love to play on failed applicants @ DU. An odd bunch, they are.

I’m sorry. I simply could not resist. My bad.

In truth, large envelopes are essential to mailing huge discount coupons! Congrats! ;)

What’s wrong with your diversity essay? It’s humorous. I’m sure admission counselors get so tired of reading the same I helped this, led that, organized these, essays. Afterall Steve Carell graduated from Denison, so maybe the university has a sense of humor?

The thing is, the envelope wasn’t all that fat. And that’s what threw me for a loop.

My S’s other acceptance packages have been more substantial, so I thought it could be a WL. But you’re right; that would be cruel indeed. ;-)

Yep, S is in with a $20k a year scholarship! Congrats to everyone who was accepted…

I’d speculate not odd humor that led to admission and cash. Funny how varied sense of humor can be.

In with $40,000 Alumni Award!

Just waiting on one more…

I just received a large envelope from DU yesterday, and they had put many brochures in it (more like information for kids who want to apply to it XD). BTW, I’m international, so the postage was $40 which made me very impressed. I also got a scholarship of 20,000 a year and some grant.
I heard even ppl who got rejected received express mail (total surprise!)

too nervous…i have not recieved my adnission decision…
