Hey Guys! I am thrilled I got into NYU for Engineering. I am a mexican citizen and therefore could not receive any federal funds from the school. I got $19,500.00 USD of Scholarship for tuition, but the total cost of tuition is $47,054. My father just became unemployed this semester and there is no way I can pay for the rest with family funds.
Any ideas are appreciated from the bottom of my heart.
You can go back to NYU with this information about the job loss to see if they can offer FA to you. However, if they give you anything, it won’t get you much closer to being affordable. (not all FA is government $. Some is from the school’s endowment).
NYU does not guarantee to meet full need for all accepted students. And the school does NOT. You can ask for reconsideration. But the reality is…you are not likely to get much more…if anything.
@“aunt bea”: They do give some students big merit packages.
I won’t fault someone for applying to some place that could be financially viable even if the odds are small (otherwise, no International with need should ever apply to Harvard), but in this car, NYU is financially unviable.
I’m afraid that’s not likely to be enough. There will be a list out around May 5 with schools that still have openings. However, I think that it’s very unlikely to be able to do college in the US for $8,000 per year.
Can you do your undergrad in Mexico or elsewhere in Latin America and maybe apply to the US for graduate school where you can get funding?
You rolled the dice on NYU and you lost (from an FA perspective). Sometimes NYU is very generous, and sometimes not. But, as with ANY college, if you can’t afford it, don’t attend.
By all means alert NYU to your changed circumstances, but you do need to have a Plan B. Good luck!
@MYOS1634 In previous years, NYU has actually written to students with high financial need who have unmet need and encouraged them to think about other universities. In this case, that is the best advice that can be provided. It is especially true for international students.
In fairness to NYU, their financial aid policy is well known as is the fact that they are generally not a “full need” university.
