Is there any benefit admissions-wise in being an out of state applicant?
Do you think it helps?
Thanks!

is it really an advantage????im not so sure, i think the advantage is for students in the state, what makes you think that?

kiplinger's december issue just named binghamton THE TOP value for out of state residents. Best Values in Public Colleges for 2008-2009 - Kiplinger.com

there is also a video link about this on the binghamton admissions website -- bottom of page -- Binghamton University - Admission

makes you think out of state applicants will be up doesn't it? only issue in my mind is if this is too late to have a huge impact this year. but just as admission overall is going to be much tougher this year (there's a separate thread where i posted link to article in campus newspaper about this), however things were in the past for out of state applicants -- whether harder, easier, or the same as for in state applicant -- expect admissions this year to be tougher because there will probably be more out of state applicants for them to choose from.

Not sure why this is the first time I've seen this Q on Bing thread, but here goes.

There is nobody who will come out and outright say that there is an advantage to OOS applicants in admission. HOWEVER, what has been seen here in the burbs of NJ, is a marked difference in the qualifications of those admitted. That being said, NYS is in dire straits. I can't imagine that SUNY wouldn't want/need to extra $$$ brought in by OOS students...and there is no mandate to accept a certain # of in-state students (as there is in other states).....

Take this info for what it's worth and a grain of salt.....as soon as EA decisions come it, there will be a better sense of how the OOS group did this year.

Thanks for your answers!
I have read that some schools like to maintain a certain percentage of out of state students (I think for the $$ aspect like Rodney mentioned), while others give preference to in state students. That's why I asked about Binghamton.

Iamhere, thanks for posting the links-very interesting!

Does it bother anyone else but me that the Kiplinger video, that also mentions the Kiplinger Top Value ranking, was done by a Binghamton graduate? Just seems a little too ...

lsd - why would that bother you? that kipplinger had an alum on its staff who would actually know something about the school do the tour? the fact that he does the voice over doesn't mean that he was responsible for the magazine's designation of the school as the top OSS value.

I don't think we know what the connection might mean, but there is a connection. In my mind, that makes it suspect. I think it's a matter of integrity.

^based on that connection, is the editor of Kiplinger's a UNC-Chapel Hill grad? I agree with iamhere...Bing has been on Kiplinger's radar for a lot longer than this guy has been making videos...I think they had him do it b/c it was a nice touch to have an alumnus speak for the school...nothing more....

What is it that you know? What do you want to believe? I don't really know anything about it except that it raises an integrity issue, and that bothers me.

lsd - obviously nothing will convince you -- you choose to be suspicious. but, you have said nothing to question the validity of the ranking other than to question the person who voiced the video.

it is very easy to raise criticism -- a lot harder to present any substantiation for it. do the facts and figures cause you to think the ranking isn't valid? is the ranking in your opinion unearned? do you really realize how serious it is to speculate that an alum employee at kipplinger played an undue role in binghamton ranking number 1?

many sunys ended up ranking highly on kipplingers list of OSS value. sunys are incredible values for oss students. binghamton has been becoming increasingly selective. it and geneseo (which ranked #2) are considered the two top schools in the very affordable suny system. what in all that makes you find a #1 ranking suspicious?

before you throw around the "integrity" stop and ask yourself what integrity there is in raising speculation without substantiation.

That's quite a rant. Since you seem to take this rather personally and have questioned me personally and my motives, I'll discuss this no further. I wasn't looking for a fight, but rather a discussion.
