I want to pursue a career in advertising, and I really like Northwestern, and so I'm wondering what I could major in at Northwestern to go into advertising. The closest I found was Integrated Marketing Communication, which is not available undergrad except as a certificate. Besides that, there's journalism (which seems very news-career based) or communication studies (which seems really broad). Am I missing something? I love the school and want to apply there, but I don't want to major in something that won't be beneficial to me. Thanks!

There is no advertising major, but we do have one of the best (perhaps even arguably THE best) School of Communications around. So, while there is no “Advertising” major, Northwestern’s substitute would probably be the Communications Studies you alluded to in your post. So, you can pursue the certificate as well as major in a quasi-advertising related field. If you go onto the SoC website at Northwestern and look up “Communication Studies,” you’ll find this apt description:

So, it would seem to fit the bill. I would think that Medill also has topics in the area of advertising/marketing, but I think that in general Medill might be a little too off the mark in terms of what you’re looking for. However, in all honesty, you can probably major in anything and go into advertising - whether that major is Communication Studies (probably the best match for what you’re looking for) or anything WCAS-related.

I also want to work in advertising and a communications major is basically the closest you can get. The classes you choose can personalize it to the field of communications that works for you – i.e., marketing.

I can’t think of a single school I applied to that had an actual marketing major…
