Advice Book for College?

Can anyone recommend a book along the lines of How to Succeed in College? I went to the bookstore, and saw quite a few, is there one or more than anyone here found particurly useful? I have a student who has had time management/work ethic issues previously (although seems to have improved).

My d and I both liked The Naked Roomate by Harlan Cohen. Funny and helpful.

Does this also deal with things like study and dont cut class? Or just how to get along with others? thanks

It's got it all. Getting along with roomates, living away from home, partying or not, time management, keeping up in class, study skills, where to get help, etc.

Thank you, and a catchy title.

Totally agree with this book. I can't wait to give it to my D this summer before she goes to school

Kayf, a friend gave D the book " Making the most of college students speak their minds" by Richard Light.
This book has chapters about faculty, advising, suggestions from students (managing time, getting help, balancing academics and other activities).

Thank you for all these hints. D has a trip with a 7 hour bus ride, each way, coming up, and I will pick one or more of these.

I loved How to Survive Your Freshman Year. Chapters on EVERYTHING...money management, roommates, what to bring, what NOT to bring, majors, minors, etc.

‘Fish Out of Water’ for Christians is a great book.:)

We bought “The Naked Roommate” last spring for a friend who was graduating. It sat on the coffee table for about a week and my son (a senior this year) picked it up several times to read parts of it. He thought it was great. The recipient loved it too. I will be getting a copy for my son this spring.

Schapiro & Marinelli, *College Transition: A Critical Thinking Perspective/i. Focused on academics, study skills, and time management rather than on getting along with your roommate or doing your laundry, but a very thoughtful, practical approach to the college-advice genre.

One more vote for “The Naked Roommate”–very relevant and informative.

Cal Newport, How to Win at College

My 8th grader took The Naked Roommate to school to read when he had some free time. He said the teacher gave him a surprised look (the cover has a picture of a naked man.) Hopefully she could read the small print…“And 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College”.
