Can anyone reccomend a good book for kids entering college next year? I looked at "College for Dummie", "The Naked Roomate" and a few others at the bookstore, but thought I would come back here and get some advice first. I'm just looking for a practical guide to college for my common sense challenged son.

Try "How to Win at College" by Cal Newport. The best I have seen. Provides very concrete suggestions about what to do and what not to do.

There is a book I recommend every student should own. Its called What Smart Students Know by Adam Robinson, written by one of the founders of the test prep service Princeton Review. I have never seen a better explanation of the steps you need to follow to really learn the material for all types of classes (sciences, liberal arts, etc), and if you've learned it well the grades take care of themselves.

One more general book I like is The Everything College Survival Book

Agree with NJdad. I picked up that book recently to show freshman S when he gets home. I looked at the "Naked Roommate" but it's too "busy" and it's trying too hard to be cool. I liked "How to Win" because it's very simple and straightforward. This is the kind of advice I'd like him to have now, not look back as a junior or senior and say, "wish I realized that stuff two years ago."
