What advice would you give to a student that is currently applying as a transfer? Can letters of recommendation help? Should SAT II & AP scores be sent?
GPA 3.5 + has better chance. For community college, you better be 3.8 +. I did not send any letter of recommendation, so I leave that to you. They also don’t view SAT II & AP, but if you have them and they can satisfy some graduation requirements, better send them.
Things to prepare:
1, You have a high chance of not getting on-campus housing.
This is my personal story:
First, http://www.sbindependent.org/with-dorms-filled-stony-brook-turns-to-dowling-to-house-transfers/ . They told me to visit the off campus housing website. I paid my security somewhere close to the South Park. Then about one month before school starts, they provide me the option of going to Brookhaven, which can guarantee on campus housing if you stay in that trash place for a year. It is far from the school, so I do not regret going off campus. I personally hated them and suggest everyone to go off campus so those corrupted offices can learn.
2, View your transfer credit in here: http://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/advising/_transferinfo/course_eqiv.html
If many of your courses are not going to help you graduate in four years, I recommend you to Binghamton.
2.5, Problem cause by #2. If you don’t declare a major with more than I remember 56 credits, you lose your TAP money. And because Stony treats outside credit as inferior, you might end up losing at least one semester of TAP money. I managed to get professors’ permission to enroll classes that I can’t take and I need for declaring the major. The “advisors” will try to fill you into a ideal schedule(for their department) so that you lose your TAP. They don’t like the idea of professor’s permission. So ask professors nicely when you face this problem/
3, Prepare to get rip off. The meal plan is pretty much a scandal. You don’t use it, you lose it. You use it, you use less than what you paid. The math about the saving does not make any sense to my 3rd grade teacher.
4, Go to clubs, the students and professors here are awesome. So although others are garbage of human being, you have a little space that is shining.
5, Expect those “advisors” to read the exact paper that you read with you. They don’t help, don’t expect them to carry you. I did not expect college to babysit me. But in Stony, you have to babysit them.
5.5, Part of carrying the school is that their Solar system in registering a class has no credit. You should not trust them. I had many times registering a class and get kick out randomly. It is a top Computer Science college and it built a new Computer Science building. But it can’t even put a few requirements in class registration. So they will kick you out of the class right after all classes are closed or full. I don’t see how their system is efficient. They ended up having a 3rd person checking the system if every class has the right student.
6, Stony Brook does not fix the problem. If you check this forum’s epic workers, they kill the problem, reject the problem, and hide the problem. So they treat the symptoms but not the root cause. Endless people putting their hatred to the school. What they do is defend and make more enemy. They are not Seawolve, they are just dogs that try to bite the Ivy League. I am sure everyone knows Princeton has better reputation than Stony. Why would it bother to give bad rating to Stony out of all other schools?
7, Stony always have low budget from SUNY. I don’t know the reason, but I am glad that SUNY does that because Stony is treating its student like ****. But you do need to expect “old” equipment.
8, Come to Stony if you are prepared to face this list and you are a Math/ Science major. I came here for the Computer Science major. If I have a second chance, I will not get over here.
Busybug - I am guessing you are not a fan of Stony Brook.
Thankfully some of the issues you raise (i.e. housing, meal plan) are not going to be an issue because the student in question will be living off campus.
I do appreciate your feedback.
The application will be submitted through the second bachelors degree program which is almost identical to the transfer application. The specifically interested in getting a degree in physics.
chinablue - Actually, being a fan of an object could place imaginary expectation toward the object. A fan is possible to know better in improving that object’s role than the object itself. Before I jump to discussing about fans, I believe it is not the word you are looking for.
" The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference " - Elie Wiesel. The school have not bother the minority. Just before last Fall semester started, there is a graduate student that lives off campus died in an accident. I am really sad about his death and I do not have power to change anything . But there is nothing worse than the school is still offering two hard choices for transfer students(Off campus or Brookhaven). I believe if the school is truly sad about his death, it should show that in action. Just right next to South Park, the Oxhead does not have night light. I hope those dead animals are not going to be replace by a student. Plain words on paper are cold. And the school did not even bother to speak about it.
I know chinablue is a radio channel of Stony Brook. So while you are going to do your job, I am going to do my job.
