Hey guys, I’m deciding on my electives now, and I was wondering- are two music electives alright, or should I try to diversify a little bit? Also, would it be weird if I don’t take art as a class, but participate in art ECs? Thanks a bunch!
You have to complete the A-G list. If you don’t CSUs and UCs don’t even review the rest of your Ap. Be sure you’ve checked all those boxes.
What grade are you in now and where do you want to go to college?
@NCalRent
Well I’m not from Cali, so I don’t exactly plan on applying to a UC or CSU…
I’m in eighth, this is regarding my freshman schedule, and I’m aiming for Stanford or Pomona. I’m also looking at a bunch of BS/MD programs, like NU HPME and Brown PLME.
Thanks fo yo response XD
Have you looked at your high school graduation requirements yet? It would be unusual for you to have two elective spots open in your freshman high school schedule after you have signed up for all of your necessary core classes.
@siliconvalleymom Yeah, I have- that’s the basis of my question. And yes, it’s unusual, but that’s apparently how my school operates. :c
Will you have the chance to meet with an academic counselor for the high school before you make your course selections? Is this high school known for a great music program?
@siliconvalleymom , I met with him already, and he couldn’t be less helpful :(( However, our high school is actually well known throughout our school district for their music program, as they’re the only high school in the district with a full orchestra, and a PHENOMENAL choir. The choir teacher is the director of the All- South _____(State) Choir.
Are the two music classes that you are considering choir and orchestra? You might also try talking to the teachers for either class and asking them about taking two music classes at once. Will there be practice or performance conflicts?
@siliconvalleymom Yes, I talked to them and they said it’s fine. There are numerous students who do this. It’s totally possible. My only concern is the non-diversity of it, and how it’ll affect the number of AP classes that I can take in the future. I’m aiming for Stanford, Pomona, or a good BS/MD program, which causes worry in that sense.
The Harvard admissions website has useful advice for selecting your high school courses:
https://college.harvard.edu/admissions/preparing-college/choosing-courses
You can map out a four year plan using your high school’s graduation requirements and course options as a starting point. Depending on the size of your high school, remember that there may be some AP scheduling conflicts.
@siliconvalleymom Thanks so much! It’s really helpful. And I will keep that in mind- my school’s huge (2,300+ kids) so I probably won’t have too much of a problem. Thanks again!
