Advice/Info Needed for NYU (in all aspects, academics, social, etc.)

Hey all, I was recently accepted into Stern class of '09, and I want some general info/advice from those with qualified knowledge. (Meaning you've gone there, are going there, have done an overnight, or have first-hand info from friends who have done any of the above...) SO...my questions are basically concerning:

1) ACADEMICS (this one applies strictly to Stern, I guess) - what are the classes like? Are they as rigorous as everyone says? And are the curves harsh? Is it really impossible to get above a 3.3 GPA? And if so how hard do you have to work? (Also, are you competing with psycho-rabid Asians who pull out all the stops all the time...don't worry, I'm an Asian myself.)

2) HOUSING - What are the traits of the different dorms? Which are the bigger ones? Which are the new ones? Which are the "social" ones? Which are the single ones?

3) COLLEGE TOWN - Basically, what is the cost-of-living if you want to have a good time, i.e. shopping, bars, clubs, movies, etc.

4) FOOD (this kind of links back to the dorm question) - What kind of meal plans come with each dorm? Which are the best? How is the food? And how expensive is food if you get it in the city?

5) SOCIAL - How is the party life? How easy is it to meet people and make friends? (Both in class and in your dorm.) Also, how much inter-college partying is there?

6) ECs - What organizations are available? Which ones are the most popular? Which ones are the most fun?

7) ATHLETICS - how talented do you have to be in order to join a team? And what sorts of sports are offered asides from the usual ones?

8) SECURITY - Honestly speaking, how safe do you feel at NYU? What are safety precautions to take, etc.?

9) STUDENT POPULATION - What is the student body like, generally speaking? Is there a wide variety of ethnicities? Are there a lot of homosexuals? How often do you see D&D type/frat boy & dumb blonde type/etc.?

daang, you have a ton of questions. Maybe you should just visit and ask people there directly....

as for the dorms, check out: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6036%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6036</a>
very informative.
here's the NYU website:
<a href="http://www.nyu.edu/housing/assignments/roominfo.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.nyu.edu/housing/assignments/roominfo.html</a>
(you can see pix of the outside of the halls there)

dining website:
<a href="http://www.campusdish.com/en-US/eCampus1/NYU%5B/url%5D">http://www.campusdish.com/en-US/eCampus1/NYU</a>
(I think it looks pretty cool. Harvard's Annenberg (frosh dining) doesn't look half as cool as what NYU offers)

my friend, a korean female who lives in UHall, feels very safe on the NYU campus (and NYC in general too) because there are often many people around

you should do some browsing on their website. A lot of your ?s could probably be answered there....

Most of the answers you're looking for can be found with a little work.

Reading through previous pages on this forum should answer some of them, and the other NYU websites will give you a start on the rest. Don't expect anyone here to sit and give detailed responses on all of your questions. There are only a few of us here who are now at NYU or who have gone previously.

Just a few other comments in response to your questions.

1 - You won't get a single room as a freshman unless you are physically disabled.
2 - Cost of living for personal expenses will vary person to person. I know some people who have a budget of $25/ week for spending money and others who have $100, and yet others who don't budget at all and spend what they want. Keep in mind it's an expensive city and whatever figure NYU gives you as an estimate is probably too conservative.
3 - Get the smallest mealplan you can, or you'll be wasting money.
4 - Making friends is easy if you put some effort into it. Inter-college partying isn't a problem at NYU. The colleges are not separate entities with their own dorms. You'll be mixed with kids from every NYU college.
5 - NYU has over 300 clubs. There's something for everyone.
6 - There are all kinds of intramural sports.
7 - Safety: You're living in NYC so obviously you need to exercise common sense but it's a safe city overall. I've never felt in danger but I also don't take stupid risks.
8 - NYU has a very diverse student population. It's one of my favorite things about it. There are many ethnicities and I've met people from several different countries. There is a large gay student population (and I'm hoping you didn't ask that as a negative inquiry). As for your last question regarding student population, let's just say that there are 50,000 students at NYU. You'll find every conceivable type of person if you look hard enough.
