Thanks, cpt. Complicating this is we knew she wouldnt get fall housing, and are about to put money on a place for the fall, but now I dont know to do. But if I dont move fast, I will lose the fall place. GRRR.

My son needed housing in NYC for an internship this summer, and found a great shared living situation with some NYU recent grads for $1100/mo. He used craigslist. The main thing is that good rooms go very quickly so your D has to jump on anything she likes (in terms of roommates and location) right away. There should be some one month only sublets. Also, med students often sublet for a month while they go do rotations elsewhere. Try NYU med for example. Good luck.

Thank you, NYU Med not great location for us, but will keep trying. Also worried that D is only 19.

I just really dont want to spend the time doing this. If her college ever calls me for a donation, I will explain why I missed time from work over this.

We may be able to help you better if you would just include the name of the school - what’s the big deal with revealing the name?

Don’t want to mention name as they are still trying to work something out. Thank you for asking.

Have you looked here:

@kayf - you really think they are reading the parents forum? Maybe the forum that pertains to the university but I really don’t think they would spend the time scanning or searching everything on CC about their school. Well, if you ever feel comfortable, post the name. Meanwhile you’re left with the options mentioned before. I know that Craig’s list can sometimes contain scams and my son almost got scammed recently but he also found his current sublet on East 85th Street from Craig’s list. He is subletting from a Columbia grad student. The place isn’t much to speak of but it allows him to go to work every day and the neighborhood is safe. I know I had to get used to kids sharing sublets with strangers. I never did in all my student years but it is very common now, especially in NYC because of the high cost. Good luck.

kayf, have you looked up monthly rates at extended stay hotels?

Beenthere, thanks but those places are all filled. Extended stay in NYC are very expensive, thanks bunsen.

Try airbnb

If you are not from the area- it’s important to look not just in Manhattan but also in the other boroughs. There are safe neighborhoods in the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan which have great subway or express bus service to many parts of Manhattan. You might ask your pastor/Rabbi/other religious leader if he/she has relationships with any organizations in NYC (many do) and they can put you in touch with people locally who may want a house-sitting situation.

Maybe this will help:

[92YResidence -Student, Intern Housing - 92nd Street Y - New York, NY](http://www.92y.org/Residence)

Just a caveat: You may have to spend more than you wanted.

Another option, in a very nice neighborhood (Murray Hill). If you call and explain the situation, they may be sympathetic and come up with a monthly rate for you. My sister-in-law used to be a member of this congregation, and her folks stayed in the guest house when visiting NYC:

<a href=“The Community Church of New York”>The Community Church of New York;

Good luck!

huh, what is aribnb?

Kayf, anyway the building where you are considering to rent for the fall have anything available earlier or have some possibilities for you? Ask them.

Cpt, We have asked if she can get in earlier. It is a coop and I dont think they will let her move in till we have board approval., but thanks

– to whomever suggested, I figured out what airbnb is

It wasn’t my suggestion, but it’s [Vacation rentals, private rooms, sublets by the night - Accommodations on Airbnb](http://www.airbnb.com/)

Warning: Some of these will be illegal rentals. My building is currently having a problem with this website.

Usually people post rooms available in their homes, but often they are entire apartments or floors.

I put in your dates and found some places at your price. Didn’t pay attention to location, however. Often there are reviews, so there’s more to go on than Craigslist.

It could be a place to start.

Its getting a combination of location and price that results in the issue. The Dean of Transfer students said I should just pay the 6,000 month for piece of mind.

OK, I live here and NY is expensive, but $6K is beyond absurd for a month for student housing. There’s nothing at Columbia/Barnard for the summer? 92nd Y as suggested above?

^^^ LOL…are you serious?
