Advice needed! which college to apply to

D is going to apply, but is undecided between math, physics and computer science. But when applying, she has to state whether she wants to go to the college of arts & sciences or the school of engineering and applied science.

How difficult is it to transfer between these two schools?

My D was admitted to engineering (BME) and transferred easily after the first day of classes. Classes started on a Wednesday, by the following Tuesday she was done (slight delay because of Labor Day falling in there and she had to wait for a signature).

Here’s a link in this forum to someone who went the other way (from A&S to Eng.), although he had started in Eng.: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/washington-university-st-louis/648740-transferring-within-wash-u-schools.html?highlight=transfer+schools

It’s legit obscenely easy to transfer between schools.

^^ I’m famous!
^agree.

I wouldn’t worry about trying to make the decision between math, physics, and comp sci before your D gets to WashU (or before she finishes her first year, for that matter…). It is, as Johnson181 and palmalk have both said, very easy to switch. As far as first-year classes, the three majors you’ve mentioned all overlap fairly nicely, as well - taking Calc I-III (depending on what h.s. classes she’s had), along with Physics 197-198, Comp Sci 131-132, and maybe Gen Chem 111 would be a totally workable way for your D to schedule her freshman year and still be in a position to pursue any of those three majors.

Thanks for the input. We won’t be able to visit campus before applying - how do you like it there?

I’m just a parent but cannot say enough great things about the school (and my D is VERY happy). She had originally thought she wanted to stay close to home (CA) but after visiting, etc. feel in love with the school. My older D is in a large private school close to home - the differences are like night & day so far as attentiveness to students (and parents), nurturing where needed; Greek atmosphere, accessibility to profs, dorms & dining, etc. The other school is great, too, it’s just that it’s much more impersonal and finding the right person/way to take care of any issue takes a lot of time and effort. In contrast, when WUSTL D wanted to transfer colleges, she had little to no trouble with the process. Older D also had some “starter troubles” freshman year and the school was NOT the least bit helpful - so we were very anxious about sending WUSTL D so far away. We need not have worried…

And there is an amazing amount of inclusion for parents - we feel closer to WUSTL than we do to the school that is less than 25 miles from home. We’ve been to freshman orientation & parents weekend and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves visiting the campus and the city (hardly saw our D); I’m involved in calling admitted students and am on a list for those who simply want to call me. There is so much attention to us - not just the student! In fact, in November of her Freshman year when she came home for T’giving D said, “Is there ever going to be a month when I don’t see you?” After first semester we did not see her so frequently but the first semester transition was smooth and wonderful!

As you can see - I’m on the bandwagon!
