I applied to WUSTL and was accepted to the school of arts and sciences as a physics major. However, I have more recently been entertaining the thought of doing engineering. Am I better of starting off in engineering and transferring schools before I get there, or should I wait until August and transfer once at WUSTL?

If you’re sure you want to change, might as well do it now. Entering Engineers can register online in the summer, while for Artsci you have to go for a weekend, or wait until August.
Other than that, doesn’t make too much of a difference.

Who should I contact to switch?

If you’ve been assigned a four-year advisor, contact them. Otherwise contact one of the engineering deans, Ron Laue or Melanie Osborn and they should be able to help you out. Transferring out of engineering (especially into physics) is a lot easier than transferring in, in terms of being on track for coursework and such. And whatever you do, DEFINITELY take physics 197/198 over physics 117/118.

And do NOT take Physics 197 with Gibbons. I highly recommend Bernatowicz, although it’s possible that only physics majors and any other majors that are very physics-based (not sure if that includes engineering) will be able to enroll in his section. I heard that today but I don’t know yet if it’s true.

WOAH. Just looked at courselistings… had no idea they were finally going forward with implementing the 117 phase-out.

Why don’t they get that it’s the professors (Bernatowicz and Trousil until she left) that really made the course so great? Gibbons is absolutely terrible (he subbed for Trousil once when I was a freshman).
