Advice on CFA

I have looked through this forum and I am still confused about the CFA process. I took the CFA at the NASS. I did "OK". I am considering retaking it, however I have read that the Naval Academy will let you know if you need to retake it. OTOH, I have read that if you feel that you can do better then you should retake it and turn your score in. Since this is pass/fail; would it be sensible to wait and see if the Naval Academy wants me to retake it?

I am academically qualified, DoDMERB: vision waiverable (item 9) with four nominations.

I really enjoy reading and implementing all the sound advice on this forum.

Thanks.

You are correct that the Naval Academy is supposed to contact you to tell you if your performance on the CFA was not up to par. They send a letter.

Still, I have had a candidate that apparently missed this notification, which stalled his review by the Admissions Board for several weeks (until we contacted the CGO).

Regrettably, there is no way to tell whether your CFA is considered a pass/fail in your online application.

If you feel you might have put in a marginal or borderline performance, you should contact your BGO for more guidance. I would tell a candidate to contact the CGO to determine if their records in the file indicated a passing score (but only if there were any question as to whether they had passed). The CGO does not need every candidate calling to find out if their CFA was a "pass".

BTW, BGO's recently were provided some additional guidance regarding of CFA's from the CGO. I think it will help you to understand what is "normal/average". It read, in part:

[Begin]

The BGO computer interface with the Academy currently reflects the date that a student completes his CFA. (This is viewable in the Student Detail page, also.) Upon further review by CGO, this system will not indicate if a candidate has passed/failed his CFA, however, the following guidance is provided: AVERAGE Scores: Males: 1 mile run- 7:08, 63 crunches, 48 pushups Females: 1 mile run 8:25, 60 crunches, 25 pushups.

Please feel free to communicate this information to your candidates. If candidates have taken the CFA, they may re-take the CFA with no penalty. Please remind your candidates they will need to contact their Admissions Officer at USNA if they wish to do so.

Additional guidance from the Director of Admissions: Males must complete the 1 mile run in under 9 minutes, and the females must complete the 1 mile run in under 10 minutes, or they will not be viewed as competitive candidates.

[End]

If you think you can significantly improve on the test, retake and resubmit....the key word here is "significantly". Improving situps by 50 is significant....as opposed to 5 to 10 more.....

if you can shave 30 seconds or more off your run, go for it; likewise 10 or more feet on the BB throw, and 5 or more on the pull-ups....

What I would suggest is that IF you can demonstrate a significant improvement in 3 of the 4 events, then submit them.... if, on the other hand, the improvement is modest and in only 1 or 2 of the events, forget about it.....don't bother the admissions folks who already have you down as "Passed."

Lastly, if this is for the upcoming class, any new numbers must be submitted quickly....figure by mid-January- to make it into your file for consideration.

mdlrnc - FOUR NOMINATIONS!! Wow! I've never heard of such a thing! Congrats. I hope the USNA finds you as competitive as your nominating sources.

Thanks ^^^^

As the saying goes, you only need one. I wish that the admissions board would use one and give the rest to other candidates.
