Advice on how to study; textbook heavy

So recently we switched semesters and I’m taking AP Environmental Science.

My teacher assigns loads of work, reading about 20-40 pages per night from the textbook, answering the textbook question, and an frq. I complete it all and I’m caught up, but the thing is I for one have never been great at retaining the information when it is purely textbook reading. On top of that the teacher does not teach the information, its kind of like she is just there. We read, and it is never discussed in class, in class we do labs that is completely irrelevant to what we are reading in the textbook at the time.

For example we are currently reading about sustainability but in class we are doing a lab on growing spinach mustard plants?

Next thing you know she throws a quiz or test at you and expects you to know the information. I haven’t been doing great, but I don’t want to drop out either because I think it would be silly if I took Earth Science my junior year because it is a freshman class at my school.

She is a very harsh grader, she makes you show all your work for the math portions. You can get the right answer, but she will mark it wrong if you did not solve it her way.

Has anyone ever had a teacher like this? How’d you study for the class?

That sounds like it would suck. My suggestion would be to outline the assigned reading and on a scrap sheet of paper write down any questions you have about the reading. Study the outlines and ask the teacher or a fellow (trusted) classmate the questions you wrote down.

Try to find youtube videos that along with the unit you’re on right now. Also, if possible, try to work ahead on the weekends if you have time

Sounds like your hate this course. :frowning: Sorry but you will have to live through it and try to get a good grade. Let this be a life lesson that you sometimes have to put up with idiots that are in charge and that everything is not always fair. For studying, I would suggest looking through those readings and making good notes for lectures during class.
